Albert Kuhnle Obituary

Albert "Ross" Kuhnle, 93, was born in Eureka, California to Albert Louis and Mildred Wood Foster Kuhnle and died at home peacefully on September 27, 2010. Dad was proud of his heritage, and was a descendant of Revolutionary War hero Col. Nathanial Scudder, Elizabeth Griscom "Betsy Ross", Humboldt County Pioneer Lewis Keysor Wood, of the Gregg Party (also first Humboldt County Clerk), and local contractor for the Carnegie Library, Fernbridge, and the old Courthouse, Ambrose Foster. He was also very proud of his loving wife of 68 years, Audrey Lee Britt Kuhnle, his son Gordon Ross, (Joy) and his daughter Robin Leeanne, his grandsons Gordon Ross Kuhnle Jr. (Angie), and Ross Dylan Kuhnle. He was fortunate to enjoy his great-grandsons, Cody Ross and Alexander Gordon Kuhnle, and his great-grandaughters Fionna Ann, Audrey Mae, and Juliet Rose Kuhnle. He met the love of his life when she was thirteen and he seventeen and he taught her how to drive! He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and travelled the world. When he got home, he married Audrey in 1940 and was then drafted into the Navy during WWII. In a letter to his mother he wrote that when he got back home, all he wanted was to be with Audrey and their Son Gordon and never leave Humboldt County again. If it hadn't been for his love of racing, he might never have left, or so it seems. Mom and Dad were a team; a perfect pair who drew people to them. Everyone wanted to be around them, and the fun, food, music and campfires at Willow Creek, and the bright light they brought to family life. Dad was a "motor head" magnet and at the age of 36 got his expert rating in enduro motorcycle racing. He sponsored hardtop, midget, motorcycle and stock car racing. He was a flagman, announcer, watertruck driver, pitman, whatever it took, he made it happen. He was a 50+ member of the Masonic Lodge #79, a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association, Farwest Motorcycle Club, Trinity Trailsters, Retreads, E Clampus Vitus 101 and past president of Six Rivers Racing Association. In 1951 he started K & M Glass Company with his wife Audrey and brought both their children into the business in '67 and '70. In this endeavor they set a high standard of ethics that has kept this fine reputation all these years. During this time in business he trained many men to his expectation of high standards of workmanship. He was like a dad and brother to many and will remain a part of them all. He was a true gentleman, and could fit in with any crowd. Always a great storyteller (Hey Dad, tell 'em about the time Dingo ate the $100 bill!). So many favorite stories, I could never get tired of them. He was funny and not from the era of politically correctness, although he was always polite. Women and children loved him. Men admired him. He was a charming gentleman always. Ross was preceded in death by his wife Audrey Lee Britt Kuhnle; and Fay Britt and Stedman Winter. He is survived by his sister Phyllis M. Wilson; brother Edward C. Kuhnle (Bunny); nieces Debra Kuhnle Heyerman, Susan A., Quillen, Louise McDonell, Nancy Vellis and Renee Miller; nephews David Kuhnle, Daniel Wilson, Jon Wilson, and Storme Winter; and cousins LeeAnn Lantrip and Janeane Camacho. The family would like to give special thanks to Jeannie Gillespie and Hannah Sample with Helping Hands in-home care, Dr. Beth Abels for encouraging him to live after he lost Audrey, and Dr. Corey Spencer. Special thanks to Ross D. Kuhnle for caring for his Grandpa this last year and themany friends who helped him. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made in memory of Ross to Hospice of Humboldt, The American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 11:00 am at Pierce Mortuary, 707 H Street, Eureka, California. The Hon. Judge John Morrison will officiate. A reception will follow at The Eureka Women's Club on J Street. Care is under the direction of Pierce Mortuary, Eureka, California. Ross,
I am very sorry to hear about Grandpa..I will always remember his cute face in my heart! He was always fun to be around and always had some kind of "advice" for us when we were in 7th grade! I remember him picking you up from school, taking us to Philipsville so I could watch you race, and the nice conversations I used to have with him and Audrey in the kitchen at their house! I also wont ever forget the countless times we listened to old music in his garage and fired up all his motorcycles just to hear them run!! We will miss you Grandpa Ross..Love, Kristina Roberts

Gordie, Robin & families,
I am very glad that I got to know your parents and I know that you dad really missed your mom after she passed away and now they can be together again.
I will always remember the times we were at their place in Willow Creek and were always welcome no matter what. I also remember how your dad went by my bus stop every morning when I was in elementary school and always waived at me.(that was a long time ago). Your parents were both great people and they will be missed by everyone but there is sure some great memories.

Gordon, Robin and family, We were saddened to hear about Ross. He was indeed one of the most loving, sweet men that we have ever known. He always had a smile for us, and a kind word. He will be missed! I'm sure that he and Audrey are smiling down at all of you now. They loved you all and each other so much. So rare to see these days. We could all learn a thing or two from Ross about family and whats important in life! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless...David, Darlene, Amy, Jodi and boys.....

Gordon, Robin, Gordy and Ross please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you you all. I met Ross just after I moved to Eureka in 1954 and was living with my sister Wilma and her husband Fred Butterworth and they were avid Hard Top fans and never missed a race at Redwood Acres and Ferndale on occasion. They had a few photos of events and I have have a photograph of his former partner Al Morris and his roadster at the Samoa Drag strip in 1954 or 55 and the K&M 54 Ford pickup is prominent.

While I was never involved in motorcycles my association with Ross was mostly on the business level and no one else did my auto or building glass but K&M. He was a positive influence on many many youngsters including my son and they all became lifelong friends of your Dad and Grand Pa.

Many happy memories to you all and keep good thoughts...

Ross touched many lives. My life was changed by him and his efforts to promote motorcycle racing. It would be hard not to remember Ross when thinking of the old motorcycle scramble days in Eureka and Willow Creek. He was a friend to all and will be missed by more than you can imagine. Ross truly was the Godfather to all us local Humboldt/Trinity/Klamath motorcycle racers in the 60's and 70's. He helped get me started as a true moto-head and along with Byrel Zollo and the rest of the Far West MC old guard, fostered my love of the sport. Racing and riding motorcycles keeps us all young at heart, and Ross's was that of an inquisitive teen forever!. Best wishes and sincere condolences to his wife, Gordie and Robin. Tho his checkered flag has flown for the last time here on earth, he is already lining up with his mates in heaven for the main event.

Godspeed Ross.

Dear Kuhnle family,
I will always remember Ross with great fondness. The summers celebrating the G.H.O.F. were some of the best. He was a gentleman, loving father & gradfather to many beyond his own kin & including myself for many years. He was indeed a wonderful storyteller. I will remember him saying "Oh Auudrey" in that gently yet stern tone. You are so lucky to have had him for 95 years! This is exactly as life should be. I know that your memories of him and your life with him will continue to be passed on to those little babies so that he is never forgotten. Much, much love to you all~
