Bob (Robert) Lorensen Obituary
BOB (ROBERT) LORENSEN JANUARY 16, 1933 - JULY 9, 2018 Lifelong Eureka area resident Bob Lorensen coexisted with cancer for many years. His cancer became harder to manage a few months ago so he moved from his home to Timber Ridge assisted living in Eureka. After a week-long stay in Hospice of Humboldt's Ida Emmerson house he died Monday afternoon with loving family near and his room door open to the smell of redwoods, sounds of birds and a sunny Humboldt County day. Born in 1933 to the late Peter and Lucille Lorensen, he attended school at Elk River, Eureka High and graduated from Humboldt State with a degree in math and science. He worked 45 years for Humboldt Pathology Laboratory and St. Joseph Hospital. Along the way he raised 6 children with his first wife Nancy (Reed) and then in 1975 blended 2 more into the mix with his second wife, and true love, Carol (Sellers) who predeceased him in 2007. For decades Bob enjoyed landlord challenges, personally managing his many apartment units until nearly his 85th birthday. What really excited Bob was duplicate bridge, friends, dancing and travel. He was a Life Master in the Eureka Bridge Club, playing bridge three times a week. The Eureka Elks Lodge was a regular hangout enjoying friends and events. At music venues around town you'd find him dancing, particularly at the Monday night Moose Lodge Friendship Circle dances. In his life he'd travelled to over 60 countries on 6 continents. Not particularly liking snow, if it wasn't cold or Antarctica he'd probably been there with Carol. Given all his travel experience, Hawaii was still his favorite place and was often enjoyed with family and friends. Bob was a long time member of the Eureka First United Methodist Church and past President of, and hearty advocate for, the good work of Humboldt Senior Resource Center. He was a loyal supporter of many Humboldt County organizations including the Humboldt Area Foundation and Humboldt State University. Bob is survived by his loving sister Betty Senestraro (Gene) of Eureka, his children Cynthia Lassen (Chris), Kenneth (Jennie), Rob (Cathy), Candi DeForeest (Bob Lashwood) all of Oregon. His son Kevin (Carie) and step-daughter Jeanne Marin (David) of Washington. Son Ronald (Barbara Urban) of Texas and step-son Steve Sellers (Lila Williams) of Nevada. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff of Timber Ridge Eureka. Additional appreciation is due Hospice of Humboldt, with special recognition to Hilary Finch for helping through this time and DeAnn Ruffner-Sarver for her respectful care. More special thanks to Reverend Kathryn Dunning of First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests generous donations be made to carry on the services and support provided at Humboldt Senior Resource Center, 1910 California St., Eureka Ca. 95501. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the First United Methodist Church in Eureka on Sunday, August 5th at 2pm and encouraged to join in the celebration of Bob's life immediately following at the Eureka Elks Lodge, 445 Herrick Avenue.
