Cody Card-Hershberger Obituary

lived his life in and among the hearts of this Humboldt Community for just over 21 short years. He met his final moment in this world in a tragic accident in the rainy early morning hours of December 1, 2010 on highway 101 in Eureka, California. Cody is finally at peace after his too short and emotionally tumultuous life. Cody attended Lafayette Elementary School in Eureka, briefly attended Zane Middle School, and spent his remaining academic years in Humboldt County Community Schools. He was civic minded and had a strong sense of justice. He volunteered in the community for Ink People Center for the Arts, Vector Rehabilitation, Angels of Hope and North Coast Resource Center. He enjoyed his first employment at Fire and Light, went on to work in the California Conservation Corps and had left that program just weeks before his death. He had found employment with a local medical marijuana organization and was also looking into becoming a forest fire fighter. He was in the moments of his young life where everything is possible. Known by us all as an emotionally intense boy becoming a man, we will all so fondly remember his forthright manner, the sound of his laughter, and the intensity with which he applied himself to everything, from menial tasks to love for his family and friends. Cody was born on September 24, 1989, at General Hospital in Eureka, California and lived his entire life in and around the Humboldt Bay Area. He was truly a child of this community, loved by so many, and was proud to call himself a native Humboldt County man. Cody is survived by his mother with whom he lived most of his life, Lois Cordova of Eureka, and his beloved step-father Ed Cordova, his estranged biological father Carl Lyle Hershberger Jr. of McKinleyville; four sisters, Jessica Reeves and Tessie Hershberger of McKinleyville, Joelene and Jenna Card of Eureka, two nephews and two nieces that he adored, paternal grandparents Carl and Geta Hershberger, formerly of Fieldbrook now of Greenwood Arkansas, maternal grandmother Jonna Lee Card of Berkeley, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. A memorial service will be held in his honor Tuesday December 7, 2010 at Sunny Brae Church 555 Bayside Road Sunny Brae at 10:00 AM. Pot Luck reception to follow. There will be a memorial altar. Please bring pictures or items to memorialize and honor Cody. Memorial donations can be made to Sunny Brae Church in Cody's name. Funds not spent on final expenses will be donated in his memory to Angels of Hope. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

Many of my earliest, happiest memories are of the Lafayette school years and recess' I shared with Cody. Cody was a very memorable person, and a very special part of my childhood. He will be missed greatly, and will always be in my thoughts.

Evidently my first message didn't get clicked right. We were at the beach house still sorting and cleaning until Sunday evening. We don't have email there. We wanted you to know we cared and knew how much it hurts, Greg was 22 and in the plane crash. That was 1973 but seems like yesterday. At the time I kept thinking things were backwards, he was supposed to take care of my final affairs and sort my stuff!! Our love and prayers are with you all. With much love, Aunt Elaine and Uncle Glen

I met cody in jr. High. He sat behind me in english class. Though its been years since I had even spoken with him, the news of his death has affected me so deeply. He was always smiling and joking. He had a great sense of humor and a good heart. He was always around to make you smile when you were having a bad day, and was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back. He was quite the little romeo too as I remember:-) I will remember cody for the rest of my life. I wish all the love and prayers in the world to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace and his familys hearts knowing he is safe and in gods hands now where no harm shall come to him ever again.

Dear Lois and Family,
You are in my prayers and I am asking all the angels I know to hover close by in your time of need. There is no understanding or making peace with a loss like this. There is just getting by, day by day until the pain is a little less intense. My mother still mourns the death of my sister over 48 years ago. I have tons of resources for you all and deal with death a lot. I will mail some stuff to you all. May you find comfort among all those who share in your pain and who wish to ease your hurt and know that we are all held and loved by a force and power way beyond our ability to ever understand. The Holy One is with you now and always. Love, Nicole

Cody your light shone brightly on all who knew you and it was extinguished far too soon. I will miss your smile and laughter. I enjoyed working side by side with you and the many conversations we shared. We always seemed to run into each other at all the reggae festivals and it will be hard to go to them now knowing that I will no longer get to see you there. Safe travels until we meet again my friend.

Ed and Lois,
I had only come to know Cody recently, but I could tell he was a special kid. The overwhelming response to this tragic event shows the impact he made on so many people's lives, including mine. This is unspeakably sad to me, and I pray for you and your family. God bless you and keep you, my young apprentice.

My heart is aching and my heart is heavy just knowing you are gone. I have so many fond memories of you as a young boy my nephew but didn't have the oppertunity to know you as a man. I'm sad. We recently reconnected and that gives me some peace. I'm sorry for what I will never know but thankful for what I have to remember. You were and forever will be loved and missed by us.
Lois, Ed and girls we are so sorry for your loss. May God give you a peace that passes all understanding.

Hey Cody,
I'm glad I got to know you. I'm glad I got to work with you. Dance with you, tell jokes, go on hikes, drink cocoa and eat smore's around the fire. Oh, and going down those big rocks and finding that really cool waterfall, and getting right up next to it. I'll miss you.

I pray for those who were left behind. I pray that in time you will be able to breath a little easier. Not hurt so much when his name spoken. Or when you see a picture of him you will smile and remember the good with a few less tears. He will never be forgotten and he is missed by many. Rest in Peace Cody you were loved and still are by so many.

Your life was short lived and you left a lot behind to feel its loss. To those who where close to Cody and his family I am sorry for your loss. He seemed to have touched many lives making them brighter. I pray now for those enduring this loss. May God hold you in his arms and provide you with the comfort only he can give in this time of hurt.
