Delmas (Del) Clarence Hoppis Jr. Delmas Clarence Hoppis Jr., 62, of Hydesville Ca, passed away on Wednesday, April 9th, 2014. Del was born September 9th, 1951 in San Diego, Ca to Delmas Clarence Hoppis Sr. and Helen Marie Hoppis. Del graduated Granite Hills High School in 1969, where he excelled in football. After high school, Del was hired as a
by the California Department of Forestry (CDF) where he worked seasonally while he attended Grossmont College, where he received his associates of arts degree. In 1974 Dell was hired by CDF as a permanent fire fighter, and in 1975 he graduated from San Diego Mesa College with an associate degree in fire science. After school, Del moved to Red Bluff Ca, where he met the love of his life, and wife of 37 years, Kizzie. I remember the night we met, we were at the Iron Horse, and I was just so impressed by him and his title, "Fire Apparatus Engineer," he laughed at me and said, 'Boy you impress easily don't you?'" Del continued to impress as he moved rapidly up the CDF chain of command. In 1979 he was promoted to Fire Captain B in Fort Bragg, Ca. In 1989 Del was promoted to Battalion Chief for Humboldt Del-Norte ranger unit, and in 1998 was promoted to Division Chief for High Rock, a position he would keep until his retirement on September 11, 2004. During his time at CDF, Del oversaw hundreds of fire fighters young and old, and always took care of the people he supervised. He was an influential logistics chief, and was an integral part of establishing CDF's incident command system. Along with his many accomplishments at CDF, Del was also an artist and entrepreneur. Del dabbled in fine wood working, metal work, and was an important part of his son's BBQ business, and astounding role model for his daughter and three grandchildren. Del will always be remembered as an "Old School Fire Fighter" a true and pure heart that would give you the shirt off his back, (as long as he felt you needed it.) He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. An inspirational figure to all that knew him. He will truly be missed. An "All Around Good Guy." Del is preceded in death by his father, Delmas Clarence Hoppis Sr., and brother, David Hoppis. Del is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Kizzie Hoppis of Hydesville Ca; Mother, Helen Marie Hoppis of Redding Ca; Sister, Cathy Wagner of Redding Ca; Son, Johnny Hoppis of Ferndale Ca; Daughter, Tabatha Barton of Fort Dix, New Jersey,Nephew Spencer Wagner of Redding Ca and Grandchildren, Sarah Barton, Abagail Barton, and Logan James Hoppis.
