Doris Moore Obituary

age 88, died Sunday, September 19th, 2010 in Eureka, California of stroke-related complications. Doris was born in Baltimore, Maryland July 1, 1922 to Margaret and Charles Hawk. She grew up as an only child and studied bookkeeping at a business college. This skill served her well throughout her life. She was fortunate to have two wonderful marriages. Doris met her first husband, Howard B. Julien Sr., during World War II at a U.S.O. dance at Aberdeen Proving Grounds while he was attending Officer Candidate School. They were married on December 23, 1942. After his discharge from the army they bought a desert crossroads business on the Mojave Desert. This was the first of several business ventures that included restaurants and vacuum cleaner stores that they operated together for more than thirty years. After Howard Sr. suffered a heart attack they sold their business and home and moved into their Airstream trailer. Together they traveled all over the United States and spent several winters in Mexico. Doris and Howard Sr. also enjoyed several special trips to Rome, London, and Asia. Howard and Doris had two sons - Howard Jr. and Douglas. Howard Sr. passed away November 15, 1984. After the passing of her husband, Doris moved to Eureka to be closer to her son Howard Jr. and his family. During this time Doris continued to travel enjoying a cruise through the Panama Canal and winning a special trip to Paris in a drawing. She also took several Elderhostel classes and continued her love of reading and learning. Doris met and married Richard Moore July 29, 1993, and they spent six happy years together until he passed away in 1999. In 2007 Doris became a resident at Alder Bay Assisted Living. She enjoyed the friendship of her fellow residents, as well as the kind, caring staff. Doris is survived by her two sons and their wives: Howard and Bonnie Julien of Eureka and Douglas and Anne Julien of Edmonds Washington; three grandchildren and their families: Kevin and Michelle Julien of Medford Oregon (great-grandchildren Andrea, Joey, and Theo), Lauren and Corey Nipert of Des Moines Washington (great-grandchild Benjamin), and Michael Julien of Tucson Arizona; and cousins Ed and Betty Jean Greene and family. Doris leaves behind dear friends Audrey Pacheco, Claudia Oliver, Linda Nelson, and her beloved cat, Buddy. At Doris' request, no service will be held. The family would like to thank the residents and staff of Alder Bay for their companionship and especially for the wonderful care she received during her final illness. We are also grateful to Dr. Jack Irvine and Hospice of Humboldt for their care and attention. Any donations can be made to Hospice of Humboldt, the Humboldt County Humane Society, or the American Heart Association. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click Obits.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I hope wonderful memories give you comfort.
Doris and I enjoyed many lunches & good times together. She was a loving and caring dear friend. And my favorite memory was when she came to Crescent City when my first house closed escrow. She seemed as excited as I was! Doris always had an ehtusiastic, optimistic outlook. One classy and sociable lady!
