Dorothy May Smith went home to be with the Lord on June 18, 2013. She passed away peacefully with her son and daughter-in-law by her side at their home in Carlotta. Dorothy was born in Santa Rosa, CA on July 31, 1919 where she spent her first fourteen years. The family then moved to the Dutton Ranch near Ukiah, CA. After graduation from Ukiah High, Dorothy worked at the Lake Leonard Ranch Resort. Later she moved to Garberville where she worked as a telephone operator for Joe Thomas. During that time she met Thornton Smith a rancher from Island Mt. They were married in Ferndale, CA on January 27, 1945. They lived on Island Mt Ranch where they started their family of three children: Evelyn, Douglas and Eunice (Bunny). In 1953 they purchased a farm in Carlotta, CA so the children could attend school. In 1963 they moved back to Southern Humboldt ranching for Tooby and Prior on the Kuntz Ranch. Later they moved to the Smith Ranch at Harris, CA. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Thornton and oldest daughter Evelyn. She is survived by her son Douglas, his wife Peggy; and daughter Eunice (Bunny) along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Anyone who ever knew Dorothy was inspired by her faith in God and touched by her life. She will be missed by her family and many friends. Services will be held at the Harris Cemetery June 22, 2013 at 2 pm. All are invited. A special thanks to Hospice of Humboldt who cared for her tenderly.
