Frank Van Deren Obituary

Frank (Bud) Van Deren passed away to his Lord Jesus Christ September 9, 2010, in Eureka, CA. He was born November 22, 1924, in Boston, MA, and spent his youth in San Leandro, CA. In 1942 he attended Santa Rosa Junior College until he enlisted in the Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific theatre. After the war he returned to Santa Rosa and upon graduation moved on to Berkeley, where he attended the University of California and played football for the Golden Bears. Bud played in the 1949 Rose Bowl and was named to the 1st team All Pacific Coast League. While at Cal, he married the former Erma Loder and in 1947 they began a life together that would last for 62 years. Upon his graduation from Cal, Bud started his teaching and coaching career that took the family to Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa Junior College), Oakdale (Oakdale High School), Marysville (Yuba Junior College), Arcata (Humboldt State College), and Berkeley (University of California). In 1966 he returned to Humboldt State University in Arcata; where he was apart of the teaching staff and coached the Lumberjacks' football team for 20 more years and was recognized as league coach of the year in 1968, 1975 and 1979. Bud received numerous awards and honors during his career; including, Santa Rosa JC, Yuba JC, Cal and HSU Halls of Fame and selection to Cal's Centennial Modern Era All-Time Football team. Yet the most important part of Bud's life was his family and all the wonderful friendships he and Erma made both on and off the field during those years. Bud was a Rotarian serving as president of the Arcata Chapter in 1989. He also enjoyed the outdoors and the family was involved in many outings. Initially this was in the form of tent and trailer camping and later included a houseboat and cabin at Trinity Lake. He also enjoyed backpacking in the Marble Mountains and Trinity Alps. Bud is survived by his daughter Sandy Westfall (Andy) of Ferndale; son Doug Van Deren (Diane) of Santa Rosa; Graham Westfall of Ferndale, Rose Alva of Ferndale, and Justin, Danielle, Tyler, and Shannon Van Deren of Santa Rosa; and several great-grandchildren. Bud was predeceased by his wife Erma in 2010 and son Steve in 2001. The family extends special thanks to Shannon Wilson and to the staff at Exclusively Sequoia Care of Eureka, and to Hospice of Humboldt for their care during Bud's final days. Friends are invited to celebrate Bud's life at a memorial service on Saturday, November 20, 2010, in the Kate Buchanan Room in the University Center on the campus of Humboldt Sate University at 2:00 p.m. with a reception immediately following at the same location. Additional details can be found at hsujacks.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Van Deren Loyalty Fund, HSU Gift Processing Center, 1 Harpst St., Arcata, CA 95521 or Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Ave,. Eureka, CA 95501. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com Click on obits.

Bud coached football and track at Santa Rosa Junior College after playing football there himself. He was a member of the Hall Of Fame at the school, as well as at Cal Berkeley. He was a gifted athelete and fine coach. It is nice to hear he was cared for by his family, as he was very close to his parents here in Santa Rosa. I appreciate having known him as a fine human being and careing coach. He saw to it that I was elected To the SRJC Hall of Fame in 2001 as a member of the track team in 1950-5l. Good Bless he and his family. I too will say a prayer this Saturday for him as Cal playes Stanford this Saturday in Berkeley.

I wanted to express my condolences to Sandy and family. It is very rare when you see a daughter as dedicated as you Sandy to the care of your mother and father during their remaining years on earth. Their last years were spent with much dignity, and the best possible life they could have had thanks to your attention to them, your love and caring. Many blessings, Lori Ghisetti-Arias, RN

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Van Deren Family. Bud was a legend and an incredible coach. (He even taught me to block!) Kathi and I will be at the "Big Game" on the day of Bud's service but as an old Bear, I'm sure he will excuse us. Bud certainly left his mark on Norther California Football and it was an honor to have played for him. Bless his memory. Go Bears! Go Jacks!
