We will miss him every day, but we have Kitty to help us remember him fondly. Such a kind, dignified gentleman and politically active forward thinker.

Mr. Hummel was a kind and gentle man. We were taken completely by surprise by this. We have seen him so many times over the 10 years we knew him and he always was a pleasure to talk with. He never complained about any of life's issues that he contended with. Everyone should have someone of such character and courage in their lives to help guide them. He was a great man. We will surely miss him.

Fred was a true gentleman, he was humble and kind, and was strong in his convictions. Many of us in Veterans For Peace looked up to him. His presence and his contributions to our organization will be greatly missed. Even in his last year, while receiving chemo, Fred often managed to get to the Friday night vigils on the Arcata plaza to stand silently with fellow members. That dedication sometimes cost all of his stamina for the day, but he felt strongly about its message. I felt honored to know Fred, and I offer my sincere condolences to his sister Janice and other family members.

I remember meeting Fred over 20 years ago (shortly after moving to Humboldt County) - we spent an afternoon and lunch on Woodley Island, where we later came upon two egrets dancing, something very lovely I have never seen again. It was in a way for me an introduction to the marvelous outdoor world of the North Coast that I enjoyed so much for all the years after until I left the state 3 years ago. I haven't seen him again, but sensed he was a very special person and it is a beautiful memory. He must have touched many people. I was very sorry to hear of his illness and passing. Pat McNerney
