Genevah Sharples Obituary

passed away on Thursday September 14th, 2010 after a long struggle with dementia. She was 94 years old. She is survived by her husband Sid Sharples, her daughter Nancy, her step-daughter Diane, and her step-son, Sidney. She was born in Kansas and moved to Los Angeles in the 30's where she attended UCLA. She became a high school teacher for over 40 years, first physical education then American history. She also taught dance, the drum and buggle corps and the leadership class composed of the students elected to school office. After her retirement, she became a docent at the LA County Museum of Art and she and husband Sid volunteered for the Red Cross. But her first love was weaving and she became very involved with the Handweavers Guild of American, becoming the national secretary and organizing one of their annual conferences, a huge undertaking which occupied her for most of a year. Her enthusiasm for knitting, spinning and weaving merged with Sid's mastery of woodworking to produce over 200 amazingly intricate spinning wheels. Genevah was adventurous and possessed energy, enthusiasm and optimism for life. She took great enjoyment from the people and experiences throughout her journeys. She loved to travel, to try new food and to meet new people. There will be a memorial gathering at Timber Ridge, McKinleyville on Saturday at 2:00 PM for those wishing to help celebrate her life. Geneva was my AP&G teacher my senior year. She was my favorite teacher and the only one that had a profound effect on all the possibilities of learning. When I think about the qualities a teacher should have, I think of her and share with others her "there are no wrong answers" that she would say when inspiring us to find out own answers to questions we had.

To the Sharples Family......Genevah was my high school student government teacher...and she is well remembered by all students at Gardena High in the 60's. Dear Family of Mrs. Sharples, I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Mrs. Sharples was a former teacher a George Washington High School of which I attended 1955-1958. She was a great teacher. I was in the Drum and Bugle corps. under her leadership. She was highly respected and the corps. was rated # one in the City of L.A. That was quite an honor! I remember her well and recognized her picture immediately. I am so sorry I didn't know she lived in the area, as I would have loved to have visited with her.
