Obituary Condolences

Helen Marie Steffen Of Arcata, California, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2013, at the age of 92. Helen was born on January 18, 1921 in Yuma, Arizona to Maude and Jack Warren. She was the second youngest of five children. They moved to Napa, California when she was a young child. She grew up there and met the love of her life, Herman when she was 18 years old. They were married in 1940 and started their family in Napa, and then moved to Washington State. They settled to Arcata, California in 1961 where they enjoyed many years together. Helen was known for being a loving mother and homemaker. She was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed making clothing for her children and herself. Helen was an active and devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish for 52 years. Despite her busy family life, she taught catechism classes on weekends and was president of the St. Mary's Guild. She participated in many prayer groups, always seeking to enrich her spiritual life by learning more about her faith. She also enjoyed taking long walks with friends and family throughout the many scenic areas of Arcata. Helen loved being surrounded by her children, celebrating birthdays, preparing for holiday gatherings, and generally enjoying the company of her family. Helen is preceded in death by her loving husband Herman; daughters Beverly Giacomini and Sherry Grummert; and great granddaughter Roseana Steffen. She is survived by her children Evelyn and Harry Carson of Aberdeen, Washington; Bill and Julie Steffen of Tenino, Washington; Bob and Nancy Steffen of Rohnert Park; David Steffen and Cecilia Boehm of San Anselmo; Dan and Stephanie Steffen of Fieldbrook; Debbie and Ron Meyers of Arcata; Cathy and Tim Miller of San Diego; Christine and Jeff Vahldick, of Roseville; Annette Steffen of San Diego and son-in-laws Frank Giacomini of Eureka and Cliff Grummert of Arcata. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Hospice of Humboldt or St. Mary's Catholic Church. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Helen's caregivers, Pixie Moreno, and the staff at Renaissance/Timber Ridge of McKinleyville, for their compassion and dedication. A rosary will be held at St. Mary's Church on Wednesday, July 31st at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, August 1st, at 1:00 p.m. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com, click on obits.
