Janet Fraser Town

Janet Town Obituary

April 21, 1923- September 19, 2010 Janet was a native of Humboldt County, born in Scotia, California, living in Carlotta as a young girl and moving to Fortuna when her mother and father built the family home in 1936. Janet passed away in her sleep in her own bed in her home of 74 years. University was next - she went to Davis then transferred to San Jose State and graduated in 1948. During that time she was courted by her soon to be husband, Colin Town; they were married in August of 1948. Both Janet and Colin then became teachers, teaching elementary school in the Fortuna/Rohnerville area for 20-25 years. In 1963, she and Colin found a piece of property on the South Fork of the Trinity River and proceeded to build the cabin that is so treasured by family and friends today... Snakey Acres. Janet was a Docent in Humboldt County and a member of University Women. Art was one of her passions. After retirement, she volunteered at different elementary schools in the Fortuna area and shared her knowledge of and passion for art with the students in hopes of pulling them away from television and getting them motivated to "get out and live their lives". Television was never her favorite. She was also passionate about gardening and nature and incorporated them into many art projects. We still enjoy many of her pieces today. Janet was always a defender of the underdog. She lived by the axiom "If you can't say something good about a person.... keep it zipped". Janet is survived by her two sons Steven and Glenn, and their wives Velma and Nancy; her Grandchildren, Coley, his wife Francine, Terra James, her husband Tony, Crystal, Jesse, his wife Kaleah and Great Grandchildren, Gabriel, Shiloh, Selah, Forest, Dakota, Olivia and Mason....... AND many, many good friends. Mom/Janet/Grandma was kind and gentle yet as tough as nails in her own way. She was loved and she will be missed. There will be a Remembrance Gathering at the Fortuna Fire Hall on Sunday, October 24 from 2 - 4 pm. Drop by and join us in remembering a life well lived. I met Janet through the American Association of University Women. One of my fondest memories of Janet was when she and Colin modeled evening wear for an AAUW fundraiser fashion show. They were such an elegant couple, the audience gasped with admiration. My other memories include her participation in our AAUW book group, when she shared a beautiful poem she'd written, when she brought some of her favorite art books to our Vincent van Gogh meeting and when she and Colin brought their homemade apple cider to our party meeting. She was indeed a talented and wonderful person. Our book group misses her.
My condolences to the family.

Janet was one of my oldest friends-of course I should say long-time. We were in many organizations together & spent times staying overnite at each others home so we could talk more. I treasure the last time we saw them. It was a shock to hear about Colins death and we are glad we had visited them. Strolled in their garden and just enjoyed being together. They did share their mountain golf course with us and many other things. I can't put into words how sad we are at this news.
She was such a lovely person and greatly loved by those who knew her.
