John Gothlin Sherman Obituary
JOHN GOTHLIN SHERMAN John was born August 6, 1942 and passed away December 20, 2017 at age 75. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Constance, his sister Ann Barton and his stepson Jayson Brauning. John was survived by his wife of 31 years, Jaqueline Gillispie Sherman and his stepson Jeff Brauning, his wife Allison and their children Ashley and Jason of Vacaville. On the day of his passing he left behind his sister Jane Fraser and her husband Herbert, who unfortunately has since passed away. John started working with the Division of Highways in 1963 as an Engineering Aid 1, spending 40 years plus until his retirement in 2004. His early work with the Highway Department involved materials testing, surveying, inspection and work as a Resident Engineer on various highway and freeway projects including the Trinidad and Pepperwood Freeways. During the early 1980's he was involved with two major landslides that closed Highway 299 in Trinity County near the Humboldt County line. One of these slides resulted in the relocation of the highway across the river, utilizing two bridges just west of the roadside rest near Hawkins Bar. After John's retirement he returned as the District 1 Haz Mat Coordinator and then for several more years he went to work for consultants doing highway construction related inspections. John joined the Quarter Century Club, which includes employees who have worked for the Division of Highways/Caltrans for 25 plus years. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows and the Native Sons. John lived his entire life on the Sherman family farm in the Arcata Bottoms area. For many years he and his wife Jackie grew and sold a variety of vegetables at the Farmers Markets. John was always very proud that he was able to work with his neighbor, Paul Guintoli and watch him become such a successful Organic Farmer. John loved the camaraderie with his fishing and hunting buddies and remained friends throughout his life with AHS classmates, John Kjer and Bob Johnson. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, February 1st at 1:00pm at the Elks Lodge, 445 Herrick Ave, Eureka. Memorial contributions can be made to the Arcata High FFA, 1720 M St. Arcata, CA 95521 or The . Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com
