1923 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Lillie Hazel "Lil" (Tompkins) Johnston-Starrett Obituary
LILLIE JOHNSTON-STARRETT Mrs. Lillie "Lil" Hazel (Tompkins) Johnston-Starrett, of Eureka, California, born on December 19, 1923 in the family house on Tompkins Hill, near Loleta, California, to the late Viola Hazel Jackson and the late William Rueben Tompkins, passed away at age 94 on May 25, 2018 in Cottonwood, California. Lillie was married to the late Richard Starrett Sr. She was preceded in death by her son, Sam Vagle; and brothers, Charles (Bus) Tompkins, Bruce Tompkins, and Delbert Tompkins. Lillie is survived by her stepsons, Randy & wife, Connie Johnston and Richard Jr. & wife, Donna Starrett; brother, Theodore Tompkins and wife, Beverly; and sisters, Joyce Cyphers and Amelia (Skippy) Carpenter. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, step grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of Lillie's greatest passions was designing traditional Pine Needle Baskets. As a Wiyot tribal elder, Lillie had acquired and developed the craft and heritage from tribal roots, melding the best of nature's gifts with rare long-leafed pine needles, bringing her work to new heights of beauty and perfection. Each of her baskets were made directly on her lap so that no two were ever alike as her hands bond with nature to guide the final design and shape. Several of her Indian baskets are in the Historical Clarke Museum in Eureka, California. She also enjoyed teaching Indian basket weaving and jewelry. Painting Indian portraits, scenery of the Redwoods, nature and animals, was also a great passion. Lillie loved to work in her garden, fussing over her many plants and flowers. Family and friends may pay their respects at the Celebration of Life service, officiated by Table Bluff Reservation - Wiyot Tribe, on Sunday, June 24 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Table Bluff Reservation Tribal Office, 1000 Wiyot Drive, Loleta, California, 95551. The funeral home will be Allen & Dahl, 2030 Howard Street, Anderson, (530) 365-5466. A Special Thank You and much appreciation to the Coordinator, Lee Ann Moore, and Alan Miller, singer/dancer, both from the Table Bluff Reservation. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com
