Louise Carlsson Obituary

Louise Carlsson, born Helen Louise Tacklind, passed peacefully at home on September 10, 2010 at sunset. Louise was born in Fargo, North Dakota in 1938, to Charles and Helen Tacklind. She grew up in San Francisco where she developed her independence, creativity, love of music, art, cuisine, and her own artistic abilities. She raised her family in Topanga, California. She relocated a number of times, attending the births of her grandchildren in Vermont, then returning to the west coast to live in Portland, Oregon, and then ultimately to settle into the best years of her life in Arcata, California. Louise was very creative and had an innate sense of ingenuity. Over the years she was employed as a Seamstress/Tailor, Stained Glass Artist, Typesetter at various newspapers including the Arcata Eye, and an Office Manager at the ACRC. Upon retirement, she enjoyed gardening, playing her cello, sewing, knitting and writing poetry. Most of all, she was passionate about her family and friends both near and far. Everyone that knew Louise said that she was a rare individual with an insatiable curiosity and a depth of wisdom that was unique. She always let others know that they held a place of importance in her life. Louise helped her friends and family by offering her insightful perspective without judgment. She was able to find humor in every situation and her laughter was known to be contagious. She lived as she left us- on her own terms and in her own time with grace and dignity. Louise will be missed by many, and will always be loved by her family and numerous friends across the country. She is survived by her daughter, Nalota Herms and husband, Charles Gillies of Portland, Oregon; daughter, Lily Herms and husband, Shao Way Wu of Arcata, California; and grandchildren, Myranda Gillies, Colette Gillies, and Roland Wu. A Celebration of Life will take place on March 20th, 2011 at 3pm at the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bayside, California. I had the great pleasure of meeting Louise at a Dell Arte show. We connected as I knew her daughter Lily. I was sitting next to her and she told me that she and a friend were driving to the show that night and their car broke down on Hwy 299 and they hitchhiked to Blue Lake. Mind you this was a few years ago. I laughed so hard at their gutsyness and gave them a ride home that night. Truely a woman that took life by the.... that savored the good things....I send you my wishes on remembering a great woman with a fine sense of humor.
