MARY ADAMS December 28, 1935- November 22, 2012 On Nov 22, 2012, Mary Adams took her last breath while surrounded by the love of her family and caregivers at her home at Renaissance in McKinleyville. Mary began her journey in Los Angeles, born to Robert Cords Jr. and Martha Jane VanNess Cords on December 28, 1935. She joined her big sister Jane, and during their childhood lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Palm Springs. Maternal grandparents, Mary Bell and Nathaniel Van Ness were very important in Mary and Jane's lives. Mary graduated from Hamilton High School in Los Angeles in 1953 and attended nursing school at the LA County School of Nursing. It was during that time that she met her husband, Neil J. Adams, a dental student a the University of Southern California. They married on Jan 28, 1956 and moved to San Diego where Neil had to fulfill his duty to the Navy. Mary bravely welcomed their first born, Suzanne Jane in 1957 while Neil was in Japan. The little family then moved to 741 Barbara Ave in Solana Beach. There, Bruce Nathaniel came in 1958, followed by Bonnie Christine in 1960, and Nancy Ann in 1962. The house was full of toe-headed kids and Mary took great pride in her home and family. Summers spent by the pool or at the beach were many, along with camping trips to the family's property in Leggett and occasionally, Hawaii. One of Mary's fondest memories was of the day in August 1965 that she was celebrated as the 50,000,000th guest at Disneyland. The whole experience was magical, as Mary and the family were celebrities for the day. In 1976, Mary and Neil purchased the Azalea Motel (now the Trinidad Inn). During this time Mary experienced some issues with poor health, and in 1978, tragedy struck when daughter, Bonnie was taken too soon by an automobile accident. It was a very difficult time. In 1980, much to everyone's surprise, Mary and Neil became parents again to Angela Joy. As their last child was graduating from high school, this new little bundle brought love and life to the family and Mary and Neil had a new focus- car seats, elementary school, and soccer games. Settling into the routine as older parents did not phase Mary and Neil. As life would have it though, Neil was diagnosed with an illness in 1990 that ended his dental career prematurely. At that time, they decided to move north to Trinidad. They lived behind the Inn in a garden home with a menagerie of animals. Angela was their center. They enjoyed the simpler lifestyle and were surrounded by their kids and grandkids. Mary kept busy making scrumptious desserts from her kitchen and preparing lovely meals for her family and friends. She volunteered at the Trinidad Library and was involved in the Chamber of Commerce. Mary was Neil's constant companion, and before his death in 2003, they shared 47 years of marriage. Mary had so many beautiful qualities. She loved dogs and they loved her. She loved to bake. She loved to sing, and always knew every word, She adored her family and mostly her grandchildren. She would take the time to read to them, make cookies, and play that game of Monopoly that lasted for days- always winning of course! She valued a good education and patriotism. She loved babies and Christmas. She loved Psalm 23. She taught us so many things we will never forget. Mary is survived by her children, Suzanne Caldwell of McKinleyville, Bruce and Janet Adams of Vista, CA, Nancy and Tom Noonan of Trinidad, CA and Angela and Josh McMann of Vilas, NC. Her grandchildren, Muir (Tina) Adams, Chase (Michelle) Adams, Dillon Adams, Elise Adams, Megan (Brendan) Grace, Lizzie Noonan, Hannah Mary Noonan, Thomas Noonan VI, Christopher Adams, Annie Cory, Taj Neil McMann, and baby McMann. Mary had one great-granddaughter, Emma Rose Grace. She is also survived by her sister Jane Neth Thompson and husband Richard Thompson, nephews and nieces, Hal Neth, Caitlin Neth Switzer, Cara Neth, Martha Neth, Alex Neth and their families. Mary's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at Renaissance in McKinleyville and Tim Haskett for their continued support over the years. A service will be held in her honor at Merryman's Beach House on December 22, 2012 at 1 pm.
