MARY AILEEN ASHBY Mary Aileen Ashby, 95, passed away on November 24, 2016 at Granada Healthcare in Eureka, CA. She was a resident of Timber Ridge Assisted Living. Mary Aileen was born on August 12, 1921 in Bridge, Oregon to Robert "Ben" and Minnie Pearl "Sperry" James. Mary Aileen grew up in Myrtle Point, Oregon, attending school and graduating from Myrtle Point High School. A year after graduation, she married Troy Ashby in Myrtle Point. Soon after, the couple moved to Eureka, CA. where Troy joined the Navy and Mary Aileen moved to Arcata to work at the California Barrel Factory during WWII. When Troy returned, they moved back to Eureka, where she worked at Penny's and he worked at Orvil Wilson Radiator. In the early 60's the Ashby's moved to Truckee where they lived for 38 years. Troy started Troy's Radiator and Mary Aileen working as a cook and manager at restaurants in Truckee. When she retired she cared for her neighbor's children Samuel, Nicholas and Oliva Duner for several years. After Troy passed away Mary Aileen moved back to Eureka, CA to be near her sister Dacie Durkin, her niece and nephew. Mary Aileen was a member of Gospel Outreach Reformational church and she will be missed by her church family. She enjoyed crocheting and along with her sister, made up to 100 hats a year to donate to various organizations including the American Legion, the Marine Corps League, Eureka Rescue Mission and VA Hospitals. Mary Aileen was preceded in death by Troy Ashby, her parents Robert "Ben" and Minnie Pearl James, her siblings, Robert "Bob" James, Rosa May Miller, Mildred Marie James, Dacie Pearl Durkin, Francis Louise Rose, Bonnie Jean Weter, and nieces Rosemary Wright and LaWanda Rose. Mary Aileen is survived by her nieces and nephews; Leon Miller, Donald (Marian) James, John (Robynn) Durkin, Jim (Celeste) Durkin, Joy (Dale) Timpany and Carolyn Eden. The family would like to make a special mention and to thank Gina DeSoto, Charlotte Levaugh and Pete Grey and George and Marina Mitchell for the care and friendship you gave Mary Aileen for close to 20 years. Her life was greatly enriched by your friendship. A memorial service will be held at Gospel Outreach Reformational Church located at 2845 St. James Place in Eureka, CA.
