Obituary Condolences

Maureen Kathryn Groff 52, of Fortuna, CA passed away on the first day of July, 2013 surrounded by her children and husband. A noted cheesemonger, philanthropist, and mecha-mom she leaves behind one and one half dachshunds, three cats and the innumerable friends, family, and strangers touched by her generous heart. A proud native of Westfield, NJ, she was born one of eight siblings to loving parents Chip and Mary Dooley. After emigrating to Northern California in the 1980's, she expertly balanced the books first for local non-profit RCAA, then for Humboldt's most beloved purveyor of fine cheeses, Cypress Grove Chevre. Perhaps the smartest person to have ever existed, it is whispered that through telepathy she spoke to her many dogs and cats, but that they had never been known to listen. Stubborn against convention, she pioneered the practice of "dessert after dessert" and fought the cancer that consumed her ceaselessly until the very end, never letting up her humor, her bravery, or her fierce love for her family. Despite her other successes, to the authors of this obituary Maureen is most remembered as the endlessly selfless mother of four handsome children and as a dear wife to her husband and midlife love Richard J. Rowley. We all hope that she is now tackling the one task she never got to in life: taking a break. To us she will always be here, lingering in the margins of every family photograph and in the voices of all who loved her. Come celebrate her life at the Fortuna River Lodge 1pm-5pm on July 21st.
