Ruth Yerton went to her eternal home on October 16, 2009, aged 99.
Ruth Margaret Bible was born January 8, 1910 on a farm near Cambridge, Nebraska, the youngest of three children of James Edward Bible and Helen Gertrude (Barrows) Bible. Ruth was raised on the family farm with all the associated chores. Sundays were the best days of the week for her. Her dad would bring out the best horses and hitch the carriage to attend church.
While attending high school in Cambridge, Nebraska, she met Homer Yerton whom she married in 1933 and ventured west first to Colorado then to Ft. Seward, CA. where they were employed by Ruth’s cousin at the Bainey family summer resort along the Eel River. Their call to ministry began at this time as they started Sunday school and worship services in McCann, CA in 1940.
After about eight years spent in the Los Angeles, where Homer attended the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA), they were called into full-time service by the Lord in 1944 becoming a team to supply the spiritual needs for three Presbyterian churches in Crannell, Orick and Trinidad, CA. Both of their sons were born during their years in Los Angeles.
Three years later, the Yertons were called by the Presbyterian Board of National Missions as missionaries to the mission churches in Hoopa and Weitchpec. In 1947, Hoopa became their permanent home.
In the mid-sixties, the Yertons moved to the coast where they pastored the Westhaven Community Bible Church for several years.
During the years between 1956 and 1972, Ruth was employed as a bookkeeper for the Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District, church secretary for the Arcata First Baptist Church and, for twelve years, as Deputy Recorder for Humboldt County. After retirement in 1972, Ruth and Homer moved back to their home in Hoopa.
Ruth was tireless in her service to Lord and her connection to the community and the many friends remained her focus for the rest of her life. She was truly a devoted prayer warrior.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Homer O. Yerton; her parents, James and Helen Bible; brothers, Vern and Robert Bible; her granddaughters, Kim and Dawn Yerton.
Ruth is survived by her sons, Philip Yerton of Hoopa and Richard Yerton of Eureka; her daughter-in-law and special friend, Janice Yerton; her grandchildren, Trinie (Rick) Arrodondo; Dutch (Carie) Yerton; Dashiell (Jessica) Yerton and Sara Yerton. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Kayla Yerton-Mitchell, Kristen Yerton, Devin Ariel, Keenan Mann, Mia and Paige Yerton, Lisa Yerton, and Serafina Arrondondo and great great- granddaughter, Jayden Myers.
Pallbearers will be Dashiell Yerton, Rick Arrondondo, Keenan Mann, Lee Alvey, George Moon and Wesley Latham.
Honorary pallbearers will be Harold "Joe Boy" Lewis, Mark McManus, Dutch Yerton, Lester Latham, Jr., Philip Mattz, Eugene Marshall, Clyde Moon, Logan Myers, Earl Carlson, Herman Sherman, Jr.
Friends are invited to attend services to be held in the chapel at Ocean View Cemetery on Broadway in Eureka, CA at 11:OOA.M. on Saturday, October 24, 2009, Pastor Ted Rivers officiating. Interment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka.

Philip, I extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I can only remember a few things about your family as I was under 10 years old when I knew you in Crannell. I know your father made a huge impact on my life.

It is with much love and admiration that we remember Mrs. Yerton. Some of the best times and memories as a youngster were at the Presbyterian Church in Hoopa and Riding the little church bus. Our prayers are with the family of this very special lady.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Yerton. I'am the youngest daughter of the late Winifred Marshall [ Cooper] and attended the church in Hoopa for many years. Mr. Yerton use to pick us up on the little blue church bus every Sunday. I have such fond memories of the plays they had every Christmas. Mrs. Yerton was always such a sweet and careing lady. Mr. and Mrs. Yerton has touched so many lives in Hoopa and the surrounding areas for so many years that they will always be remembered with much love and many fond memories.
