Shirley Ann Messer Born November 15th, 1945 in Eureka California; went to be with the Lord on November 18th, 2013 at the age of 68. Taken away by Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a degenerative neurological disorder that is incurable and invariably fatal. Shirley was a 1963 graduate of Eureka High School. She actively participated in many school activities, excelled in business classes and loved being a Eureka High Loggerette. During her summers Shirley spent time in Orleans with her Uncle Robert (Bob) Hensel, and first cousins Judy Berry of Healdsburg and Barbra Mosher of Mission Viejo. After high school Shirley went on to enjoy a career in accounting. She began with a local credit union and then moved onto Big Loaf bakery in 1964. She eventually accepted a position in the accounting department for Eureka City Schools. She was quickly recognized for her abilities, and in 1980 Shirley was given the opportunity to apply and interview for a job as the Budget Director at Humboldt State University. Applicants came from all over and after a couple of rounds of interviews Shirley was chosen for the job. She spent almost 24 years managing Humboldt State's budget and enjoyed every minute of it. Shirley retired from Humboldt State on May 16th, 2003. When not working, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her husband of 45 years Richard (Dick) Messer. Dick and Shirley met when they were both working for Big Loaf bakery in the late 1960's. They were married in Santa Rosa, California on February 22nd, 1969. Dick and Shirley enjoyed traveling to the Hawaiian Islands with good friends Lowell and Enid Ambrosini. During one of their many trips to Hawaii, they visited the Island of Kona to participate in a reunion for the members of the Humboldt State College Korean War Veterans Comus Club. In addition to traveling to Hawaii, they often traveled to Dick's home state of Texas for the annual Casey family reunion. Dick and Shirley own property in Leroy, Texas, 25 miles south of Waco, where they have many relatives and friends. Shirley was active in different organizations outside of the Comus Club. She volunteered for Hospice doing clerical work where she made a number of friends. She enjoyed gardening, and working at her potting table in her backyard. Shirley also loved animals and was known to feed the neighbor's cat from time to time. Shirley will be remembered for her kind heart and will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her grandmother Agnes Hensel and mother Frances Queen. She is survived by her husband Richard (Dick) Messer, along with many family and friends.
