Thomas Swartwout Obituary

Tommy passed away at his Fruitland Ridge home on September 29, 2010. He was born in Pennsylvania on January 21, 1950. He grew up with four brothers and a sister. The Swartwout family lived in New Jersey, New York and Illinois before making their way to Laguna Beach, California in 1960 where they lived for the next ten years. Tommy often recalled fond memories of his life by the beach. After high school he discovered Ferndale and in his twenties he, and his brother Jeff, began woodworking by utilizing burls that drifted to shore. Together they made furniture and guitars. Later on Tommy built his home in Southern Humboldt with his wife, Quigley, and was a caring father to his much loved step-daughter, Mishka. Thomas was preceded in death by his father Thomas, mother Kay, wife Quigley Gaylord, brother Jeffrey, and nephew Casey. He is survived by his brothers George, Bo, and Chris, his sister Kathryn and brother-in-law David, nieces Amy, Kaylin and Sarah and their children, step-daughter Mishka and her son Austin--all of whom he was very proud. His presence will be missed by his loving companion, Cindy Sanders with whom he instantly fell in love. The last of his years were spent by her side. Tommy also had many close friends he regarded as family. He was known as a generous person who helped those he could. He always spoke his mind and his personal brand of humor brought laughter to those who knew him best. A gathering to honor Tommy's life is to be held at Meagher's Saloon in Myers Flat on October 23 at 5 PM. Please bring a dish to share. My deepest condolences to the Swartwart family. I was a couple years ahead of Tom at LBHS and I didn´t know him very well. My sister, Kathy was one of his classmates. Bo was in my class and I also remember George, who was a couple years ahead of me. Best wishes for the entire family.

We were so sorry to hear of Tommy's passing. I always thought the world was a better place because Tommy was in it. I remember how he made the kids laugh with his jokes and juggling. Best wishes to you and yours.

Kathy and family, Our thoughts are with you at this time. Losing a family member is so hard. We did not know Thomas, but knowing you, he had to be special. Tell Chris, if he remembers us, we are thinking of him too. Glen and Mary Hubner

I am saddened to here that Tom passed on. I have very many fond memories of him. I remember when Judy Butow and I lived across the street from Mickey and Barry out at Port Kenyon. Tom build Judy and I a kitchen table out of a spool. It filled up the whole kitchen. You had to walk sideways to get around it. May he rest in peace. I will not be able to attend his wake as I have had plans for that weekend for over 2 months, but my spirit will be there.
