Violet J. Barber

passed away on June 11, 2011 in Eureka at the age of 85. Born on March 6, 1926 in Fort Sill, OK, she was the daughter of William Emil Kidd and Edna Pearl Garland Kidd. Violet Josephine Kidd met Herbert William Barber in 1946 while both were employed at Cottage Gardens Nursery in Eureka. After a short courtship, they were married in Reno, NV on September 7, 1946, and spent the next 37 years together, until Herbert's death in 1983. Their love and devotion for each other and the family they raised never wavered and Violet loved and missed him still, after all these years. Now they are united in love once again. Violet loved spending time with and taking care of her family. She was an avid gardener in the past and she always loved having her yard filled with flowers, her favorite, of course, being the violet. She enjoyed crocheting for years and made many beautiful afghans, and made sweater sets for each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren as they were born. As her health declined in recent years, she spent her time watching soap operas, her favorite being Young and the Restless. She also loved watching the Giants and the 49ers when they came on TV. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching QVC-she became one of their best customers! She especially loved the Cooking With David show and kitchen programs, and was delighted whenever she received a delivery of a package. Violet is survived by her children, Herbert W. Barber, Jr., Susan M. Hinds, and Michael E. Barber and his wife Mary Barber, all of Eureka. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Tina M. Barber of Marysville, CA, Herbert W. Barber, III, of Ridgecrest, CA, Joseph E. Miller of Eureka, Kimberly A. Bushnell of Vancouver, WA, James R. Hinds, Jr. of Cave Junction, OR, Christopher Barber of Eureka, Michael E. Barber, II of Eureka, Dustin Barber of Eureka, as well as 23 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and former daughters-in-law, Janice Kraemer, of Wheatland, CA and Jean Barber-Villneauve, of Minneapolis, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Herbert W. Barber, her siblings, William E. Kidd, Jr, Dorothy L. Duarte, Shannon O. Kidd, Edna M. Yandell, twins Faye and Frances Kidd, her niece Linda Lee Galvez, and her grandson Michael B. Barber. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Josephs Hospital, especially Dr. Raimhatu and Dr. Zinn, of the ICU, for their excellent care and consideration during this difficult time. Visitation will be at Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E Street, Eureka on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon with the funeral service starting at 1 p.m. Violet's favorite color was purple, therefore in her honor please wear something purple to her service.
