Wesley Windsor Obituary

Windsor Wesley left us unexpectedly, due to lymphoma on October 15th, 2010. Wes was born on February 16th, 1927 to Helen and Ernest Windsor in Detroit, Michigan. When he was nine his family moved to Fontana California, where his father had an ice business and small orange grove. He grew up during the depression, with many neighborhood friends. He, like many of his neighborhood friends joined the service, in February 1945. Wesley joined the Navy. In 1949 he joined the Army, and served in the military police. After his service in the Army he took courses at Chaffy City College. He came to Humboldt Co. in 1954 to go to HSU and Major in accounting. While working at S/H Kress in Eureka He met Anna Nielsen. They fell in love, married and started a family. They settled in McKinleyville. In 1957 he started his career in the Auditor/controllers office for the County of Humboldt, where he made many friends and acquaintances. As President of the County Employees Association, in 1967 he headed a labor dispute concerning fair working wages. Ultimately the Supervisors accepted the workers terms and the concerns of the workers were met. He and his family would travel the western states for adventure as well as rock hunting. He enjoyed his son and daughters' achievements in life. He loved family gatherings, picnics, and holidays. He loved crossword puzzles, playing cards (especially POKER). An avid reader, Wes read a lot, especially this last year. His home is filled with books of all eras of history, many books on the American Wars of the last century, and books on politics. He enjoyed the T.V. series Law and Order, and sports channels. He enjoyed his association with the Toast Masters, which gave him confidence in his career. Wes received his A.A. from College of the Redwoods in 1981. In 1984 he received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Humboldt State. In 1986 he retired from his service to Humboldt Co. In his retirement he traveled the west visiting Lighthouses with his life long sweetheart Anna. Wesley is proceeded in death by his wife Anna Nielsen Windsor, daughter Wendy, his parents Helen and Ernest Windsor. His sister and brother in-law, Marjorie Nielsen Smith and Herbert Smith. Brother in-law Carl Nielsen. And Nephew, Craig Smith. He is survived by his son Mark, grandchildren Mark Wesley and Amanda Windsor. Nieces and nephew Gale Smith Hippen, Debbie LaCroix, Kristine Stucky, and Erick Nielsen. Wes Windsor was the best boss I ever had. He was fair and listened and cared about his employees and his job. His wry sense of humor took a little getting used to but once you figured it out you could grin with him. He was also a great Pinochle partner and we used to race up to the cafeteria to get a place together. I remember when he retired. I broke the office policy of no public parties (Vickie's Rule) and gave a party for Wes in the cafeteria. He was too well liked and respected by his fellow employees not to. His wife made pate and almost all the employees in the Courthouse came by.
He was a great man and I mourn his passing.

Cousin Wes was a great guy to know. In a family of strong personalities, his demeanor rang out for its calmness. I had not recalled Wes' love of learning and education, but see it here. Its odd how you see someone at dozens of extended family events over decades and learn things after the fact. He was one of the last of the youngest group that could be considered part of the Greatest Generation. Those people who lived through the Depression and the Wars are sorely missed. They had character and integrity, the likes of which we shall never see again. They worked hard, but took time to help others. They enjoyed life, provided for their families, loved their grandkids, and provided an amazing world for us to be born into.

Thank you, Wes. I have priceless memories of my mom, Bev (Dolly) Thompson, and I visiting you all, of card playing, and times seeing you with Anna and all of you together with Marge and Bill. I hope you all know how very much the kids appreciated who you were and what you did...

My condolences to my cousins and so many others who feel the loss.

Sincerely,

It was a pleasure to share coffee and stories with Wes for nearly 15 years. He had strong feelings for his fellow employees and always tried to do what was right for them. We all enjoyed his stories of events because he often inserted an unexpected "twist" to the tale. My condolences to his family during this time of bereavement. I'm sorry that I won't be able to attend services.
