After a brief illness, Don Talley, age 93, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2010, at his Eureka home surrounded by loved ones. Born June 7, 1917 Don was raised in rural Ilinois and subsequently made southern California his home. He was a longshoreman and minor league pitcher for the Chicago Cubs on Catalina Island until he joined the United States Air Force and entered WWII as a Liberandos B-24 bomber pilot. He was credited with fifty combat missions in the European theatre and was awarded the Purple Heat and Oak Leaf Cluster for valor. Following the war,for the next 66 years, he made Eureka his home. He had coinciding careers as a legendary timber faller and astute real estate investor. He was a participating member of the Ingomar Club, the Elks Club, and Baywood Country Club. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Dolores Lucas Talley, in 1993 and is survived by his children Judy Talley, Susan Talley Covington, and Keith Talley, his second wife Laverne West Talley, and his five grandchildren; Kadrian and Julian Talley, Marley Jane Anderson, Tyson and Ashlee Covington, along with various nieces, nephews, and great- nieces and nephews. Dedicated to his country, devoted to his family, and loyal to his friends, he will live forever in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Humboldt. The family would also like to acknowledge the exceptional care of physician Dr. Allen Mathew and his staff.
