Gloria Marie Briggs

Obituary Condolences

April 23, 1918 - October 15, 2011 Gloria Cardoza, daughter of Frank S. Cardoza and Constance Veagas was born on April 23, 1918 in Bayside California (Sunny Brae). Her parents and older siblings had immigrated to America from the Azores Islands, Portugal in 1906. She, along with twin sister Flora was the youngest of ten children which included: Frans, John, Marie, Margaret, Louis, Laria, Enos and Constance. As a child she grew up on the Cardoza family dairy, learning all aspects of farm life. It was here she developed her love of cooking, sewing, working in the garden and caring for animals. In 1935 she married Mateus Candieas and the following year their daughter Marie Barbara Candieas was born. (The marriage was quickly dissolved.) Soon after, she would meet the love of her life Donald Arden Briggs. The two were married in 1940 and continued to live in Eureka California.. Together with step son Floyd Arden, the Briggs family was firmly established. In addition to house wife and mother, Gloria worked at the Eureka Shipyards during the war as a real-life Rosie the Riveter -welding dry docks and barges. Along with her husband she helped build and construct dozens of homes in the Humboldt area in which the family resided. After living in several California cities including San Francisco the couple decided on finally settling down in the town of Napa. In 1965 Gloria relocated to Napa California where her husband Don had been hard at work building what would be their final home on Wilkins Ave. Soon after, her daughter Marie and (Son in law) Ernest Wooden Cole moved their family to Napa and a new chapter in her life began as a grandparent. As a grandmother, Gloria's light shined bright. Her love of her grandchildren took center stage and she played an important role in their upbringing. Her generosity and love for family always came first and she was always there when needed. After the death of her husband she continued on and found a new passion for baseball. Giants' games were a staple at her household and she followed games whenever she could. She leaves us after 93 wonderful years of life and to each heart she touched she will be remembered always. She is survived by: (twin sister) Flora Madden, (daughter) Marie Peters, (step son) Floyd Briggs, (grandchildren) Brenda Ferrario, Debra Ervin, Aaron Cole, Bryon Cole,(great grandchildren) Rina Ferrario, David Ferrario, Derrick Ervin, Devan Cole, Payton Cole, Alexander Cole, Maya Gloria Cole, Ella Cole.
