Obituary Condolences

Eve Bistrin, a former long-time resident of Fortuna and Eureka, died April 1 in Aptos, CA, while surrounded physically and in spirit by her loving family and friends. She was 89 years old. Known for her infectious smile, stylish appearance, strength, warmth and generosity, Eve was born to Russian immigrants, Max and Esther Feldman, in Sioux City, Iowa. After high school, she attended the University of Minnesota where she met and married James Levich. Following World War II, the couple made their home in Carlsbad, N.M. where they raised two daughters and Jim operated a family clothing store. About a year after Jim's death in 1958, Eve and her daughters moved to Los Angeles. In March of 1964, she married Herman Bistrin, the son of prominent Humboldt County residents, who, with his brother Harry, operated Meyer Bistrins, a family-owned chain of retail clothing stores based in Eureka. She and Herman resettled in Palm Desert in 1980, residing there until 2009, when they moved to Aptos to be closer to family. Eve is survived by her husband, Herman, of Aptos; her daughters, Terri Levich, of San Francisco and Susan Levich Kite, of Palm Springs; stepson David Bistrin, daughter-in-law Anita and three grandchildren, Aaron, Noah and Henry Bistrin, all of Santa Cruz, CA; nieces Estelle Goodman Saltzman, of Sacramento, Karen Bistrin Duncan, of Lopez Island, WA, Tina Bistrin Griffith, of Eureka and Kate Bistrin Connor, of Aptos; and nephew Emil Bistrin, of Seattle, WA. Eve was preceded in death by her sister, Bernice Goodman, also a long-time Eurekan. No public service will be held. Donations in Eve's memory can be made to Birthright Israel Foundation, P.O.
