beloved father, grandfather, husband, and friend, died peacefully Tuesday, August 15, after a brief illness. He was 71. Neal was born June 7, 1941, to Ernest and Helen Tierney in Eureka, California. He grew up in Eureka and attended school here, graduating from St. Bernard's High School in 1959. While at St. Bernard's he was a standout athlete in three sports, lettering in basketball and track and earning All County honors as a center on the football team his senior year. After graduating from high school Neal moved to San Francisco his favorite city - to attend college. He achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from San Francisco State University, then moved back to Eureka to start his family and his career. Neal married Jean Johnston in 1963, and the couple had three children together Jennifer, David and Michael. They were divorced in 1976. On April 2, 1977, Neal married Paula (Patterson) Frost.Paula had two children from a previous marriage Crystal and Jason and a nephew, Joseph Lewis, who was like a son to her and Neal. They were married nearly 32 years before Paula passed away in January 2009. In the early 1970's Neal worked in the accounting office at General Hospital, and later worked as an accountant at Hesse & Green. He held various accounting jobs over the next several years before starting work at the Humboldt County Auditor's Office in March 1981.He worked there for almost 26 years, retiring as the Assistant Auditor-Controller in February 2007. Neal also worked for several years during tax season at Skipper & Breckner, which he continued even after retiring from the county. After Neal's retirement, he and Paula realized a dream by purchasing a summer home in Willow Creek, which the family continues to enjoy to this day. After Paula's passing it remained one of Neal's pride and joys to be able to spend time with family there under the warm sun, BBQing, swimming in the pool, and visiting. Neal was an active volunteer with the Redwood Coast Dixieland Jazz Festival for several years, and began helping with the bookkeeping there in 2010. He also recently worked as a consultant for the City of Trinidad. Among Neal's many joys was following sports, particularly the San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants and Cal Golden Bears. He was as loyal a fan as he was a friend, supporting and following his teams through the good seasons as well as the bad.On any given Sunday during the fall, you could find Neal surrounded by friends and family in front of a TV rooting on the scarlet and gold. His loyalty to his favorite teams was surpassed by his loyalty to his family. It was a rare occurrence for Neal to miss a game, recital or any event involving his children or grandchildren. He also had many dogs over the years who were very special friends to him.
