Mel Kangas Mel passed away at his home in Creswell, OR of natural causes on December 17, 2012. He was 58. He was born on April 1, 1954 in Arcata to Oiva and Lois Kangas. Mel grew up in Arcata, went to Sunny Brae Elementary, Stewart Middle School, Arcata High School and College of the Redwoods. He was a legendary football player in both high school and at CR. In high school Mel was named to the Coaches All County. At CR he was named to the Golden Valley All-Conference Team. Mel was recently inducted into the 2012 College of the Redwoods Hall of Fame for being instrumental in State Football Championship of 1972. Mel helped found the Humboldt Rugby Club and served as Assistant Coach for the Humboldt State team for several seasons in the late 80's. Mel had a variety of jobs but the main interests in his life were art and nature. He had a deep appreciation of the natural landscape, particularly the forests and shores of Humboldt County. He was a prolific artist creating both drawings and custom ceramic planters for bonsai fanciers and cultivated his own quite extensive bonsai collection. He moved to Oregon in 2004 and devoted himself to his art. Mel is survived by two sisters, Judith Shapiro (Kangas) of Eugene OR, Karen A. Penselin (Sullivan) of Vancouver WA and his brother Robert L.
