Theodore David Maxwell passed away April 2, 2013, after a lengthy illness. He was born on May 11, 1937, to Theodore and Jennie Maxwell of Fortuna, California. Ted grew up in Fortuna, attending school there and graduating from Fortuna High School. While in high school, he started working at White's Grocery Store. That job started his career. He attended College of the Redwoods and graduated as an apprentice butcher. Ted took great pride in being an old fashioned butcher, not a meat cutter. He worked at Campton Heights Market and Redwood Meat Company. Later he was part owner of J & J Meats, and then Eureka Wholesale Meats with Barney Barnhart and Les Ambrosini. Ted fancied sports cars and women, fast and wild. He had quite a few of each. His most cherished home was on Kneeland; it was where he was most comfortable. He loved the whole country lifestyle, splitting wood and planting fruit trees and evergreens. Ted was a workaholic, and he didn't take many vacations. The years of breaking down beef wore on his body. He had to retire due to health reasons. It took away his spirit. But he still enjoyed going for coffee with his brother Jim and working on John Deere tractors with his cousin Richard Maxwell. It was always the simple things that gave him pleasure, like a rib eye steak hot off the grill sprinkled with his Ted & Barney's Meat Seasoning, a cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee, the warmth of his wood stove, or of a woman. Ted is survived by his brother James (Jan) Maxwell, his sister Joan (Bill) Lorton, his daughter Teddy (Joe) Wilwerding, his son Adam Maxwell, and many grandchildren. Ted appreciated the outstanding care he received from Drs. John Gambin and John Brimlow. The family would like to thank the staffs at Timber Ridge and Renaissance for the wonderful care that Ted received during his stay. Thanks also goes to the compassionate people at Hospice of Humboldt. It was Ted's request that no service be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501. Ted had a strong will to live and great courage. In death there is peace.
