Jean Betty Liening December 22, 1923- April 5, 2013 Jean Betty Liening passed away April 5, 2013 at the age of 89. She was born in Tipler, Wisconsin to Harry & Alma Ketchum on December 22, 1923. In 1938 her family moved to Morton, Washington, where she met Robert D. Liening, Sr. They were married on April 6, 1944 in Centralia, Washington. In the late 1940's they made another move to Humboldt County where they raised their three children: Bobby, Carol and Patti. Bob and Jean lived in Miranda until 1968 and moved to Fortuna which was to be their permanent home. They loved to travel with their family in their camper and went on many adventures to all the Midwestern states with Jean's mom, Alma and daughter Carol playing rummy in the back of the camper. As the family grew, the camper size grew. Mom was also an avid gambler and was delighted when they built the Bear River Casino. She loved to play the slots and "21". Her grandson-in-law Mark called her "Gambling Granny". She enjoyed playing Bingo with her friends, going to yard sales on most weekends and attending the numerous family dinners at Richard and Patti' s house. Mom fell inside her home and broke her hip and elbow, which required her to move to Fortuna Rehabilitation and Wellness Center which became her home for the remaining five years of her life. Fortunately for her, they had "casino day" and she could still go to Bear River, have lunch and gamble with her son-in-law Richard Tomasini. One of her frequent visitors was her "Granddog" Napoleon. He would run all the way down the long hallway at Fortuna Rehabilitation and into her room because he knew which door was Mom's. Before we left, he would give her kisses on her cheek which always made her giggle with delight. Jean is predeceased by her husband, Robert "Bob" Liening, Sr., son Robert "Bobby" Liening, Jr., mother Alma Ketchum, father Harry Ketchum; her brothers Mike, Harry, Doug, and Tom Ketchum; her sister Peggy Toole; son-in-law Richard Tomasini. She is survived by her sister Janet Jones, daughters, Carol Blaine and husband Walter of Vancouver, Washington; Patti Tomasini of Fortuna, and daughter-in-law Cookie Liening; grandchildren Trish Wardrip and husband Jeremy, Stacey Lydell and husband Mark, Robby Liening, Tammy Green, Kevin Newman and his wife Anna. Jean was blessed with eight great grandchildren: Jordan, Mitchell and Sophie Wardrip, Tanner and Logan Lydell, Jamie and Kaitlan Green, and Kale Newman. Our family would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Fortuna Rehabilitation and Wellness Center for the wonderful care they gave to Mom in her final years.
