Kenneth George Wells Jr. Kenneth George Wells, Jr. passed away May 29, 2013 in Fortuna, California after a very long illness. He was born in Richmond, California on May 5, 1941 to Kenneth and Georgiana Wells. Kenny was a proud member of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria out of Sebastopol, California. Kenny grew up in Fortuna, California. He graduated from Fortuna High School in 1960. Kenny was a very talented and gifted athlete and excelled in track and football. He played semi-pro football for the Humboldt Foresters. After he finished playing sports he put forth his energy in coaching Pop Warner Football. Ken started his own business in Loleta as a gas station owner and later on he opened a repair shop in Fortuna called "Top of the Hill." Ken's specialty was in fixing 4-wheel drive rigs. Ken loved people and liked to be surrounded by them. He had so many friends (too numerous to mention) who used to hang out at the gas station and the shop in Fortuna. Sharkey Sherman and his brother-in-law Duane Bowie were sometimes his partners-in-crime. Kenny often hosted barbeques at his home and could be often seen grilling outdoors. Ken had a good sense of humor, was a very generous man, and at times had a stubborn streak. His greatest love was the love for his family. He loved his first daughter Shawna and his son Jeff. He married Brenda Bowie and together they had two children. These children, Brian and Maggie were the center of his life. He could be seen at many ball fields and the gym watching his children play ball. He was fortunate enough to stay at home and raise Maggie from a baby. He was so proud of his children and he was a great parent to them. He was very protective of his children and would do anything required to protect them. He was also blessed to have a loving family in Santa Rosa, California. His brother Leonard and he were forces to be reckoned with during high school and after. They were tough Indians when they needed to be and were involved in a couple of shuffles whenever they got a little rowdy. He was lucky to have his brother Leonard and his nephew and niece Troy and Lenee who would call him often on the phone. Leonard, your loyalty to your brother was a testimony to your loving parents. He never stopped loving his favorite sister-in-law Wanda. He was diagnosed with COPD and suffered many years spending time in various hospitals. He was forced into using a wheelchair but his spirit was never broken. He was strong as an ox and had the heart of a lion. His failing health required him to spend time in Seaview Convalescent Hospital. He liked to be an advocate for patient rights there and did everything he could to help. He was an ornery patient but he was loved by the orderlies there, even if Ken gave them a hard time now and then. He however, did not settle for living his last days there and eventually moved out and shared an apartment with his son Brian. It was all he talked about: he wanted his own place and he achieved that. Wellsie (his nickname by some) had a love for hearty food, which eventually caused some health problems for him. However, he was strong spirited and had hope even in his last days, of walking again and that hope helped him make it through his struggles that his health conditions put him through. In his younger days he partied with the best of them and even once was entered into a dancing contest. He especially enjoyed the company of his sisters-in-law Porky and Judy. Porky and Judy were loyal friends to Kenny and he loved them very much. He also tried his hand at stock car racing and drove his Chevy "OO" to a few wins. He enjoyed racing at Redwood Acres against the likes of Larry Pries and Jim Walker to name a few. He enjoyed riding motorcycles with Scott Luiz on different logging roads when he had a chance. He was a NASCAR fan and loved watching the races on TV. His favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and "Little E". He was an L.A. Laker, Rams, and Dodger fan. He loved gambling and loved to make bets whenever possible. He was a man of many stories and could B.S. with the best of them. He was a fierce man with a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. He was loved and will be missed by many people. He was lucky to have so many special friends in his life. Special thanks to the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria and Bear River Tribe for all their support during this difficult time. He was proud to be Native American. He is preceded in death by his Dad and Mom Kenneth and Georgiana Wells and his Uncles Robert and Edward Ruise. He is survived by his children Brian and Maggie (Matt) Wells, his brother Leonard Wells, nieces and nephews Troy and Sandy Wells, Lenee and Rob Greene, Matt, Megan and Britney Wells, his Uncle Jim Ruise, his ex-wife Brenda Bowie and her extended large family. He will always be known as Uncle Kenny to his numerous nieces and nephews on the Bowie side of the family (lots of them-you know who you are!), his special sisters-in-law Wanda, Eloise, Norma, Aileen, Judy, brothers-in-law Duane and Larry, father-inlaw "Chief" Elmo Bowie, special friends Scott and Sharkey and the "old" gang from Fortuna. A special thank you to the Home Health Care Providers who do a great job and to his neighbors that looked in on him. Casket bearers are: Brian Wells, Leonard Wells, Gary Robinson, Sharkey Sherman, Troy Wells, Rob Greene, Scott Luiz and Matt Warner. Honorary Pallbearers are: Elmo Bowie, Ivan Carter, Duane Bowie, Eloise Bowie, Judy Freyslaben, Dave Mell, Gary Sarvinski and Jim O'Neil. Friends and family are invited for visitation on Monday, June 3, 2013 from 12:00 AM until time of service at Gobles Mortuary, 560 12th Street in Fortuna with services following at Gobles Mortuary at 2:00 PM.
