Julia Estrada Viegas

Obituary Condolences

Julia Estrada Viegas "Vo" 1907-2013 After 106 years on this earth, Julia E Viegas died on June 24, 2013, She was born to Mariana and Joaquim Estrada on January 1907 in San Bras de Alportel, Portugal. In 1920, at age 13, Julia, along with a family friend, set sail for the United States to be reunited with her parents and younger sister, Mary. They had left Portugal several years earlier to try to improve their lives by finding work in America. The family lived in Rio Dell, California until 1928 at which time, her parents and sister returned to Portugal. In 1923, she married Manuel J Viegas. They were married for 57 years and had two daughters, Nathalie Giacomini and Alda Nordstrom. Manual and Julia made Rio Dell their lifelong home. Once her children were older, Julia went to work at Bertain's Laundry in Scotia. She worked there for many years as a seamstress. She took pride in her work and often reminisced about her time there. A long anticipated return to Portugal occurred in 1954. This was her first trip back to her homeland since she immigrated. She was able to visit her mother whom she hadn't seen in 26 years. It was the first of many trips to her beloved "Old Country". Julia's sister, Mary resides in Lisbon, Portugal and the two sisters cherished every visit they would have together. She took her last trip to see her sister when she was 86 years old. Throughout her life, Julia remained proud of her Portuguese heritage. She was a member of St Patrick's Parish in Scotia, California. At one point Julia was Secretary for the local Portuguese Lodge and an active member for many years. Throughout the years, Julia gave much love, time and energy to her family. She enjoyed large gatherings filled with family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and loved watching her family enjoy her meals. She surprised and inspired all of us when at her 100th birthday party she had no desire to sit down but rather socialized and mingled with all of the guests for the entire four hours. We are so thankful that our dear "Vo" was able to remain in her home and lived a full and vigorous life until just a few weeks before her death. Her daughters, Nathalie and Alda, helped to make this possible for her and to them we are grateful. Vo retained her sense of humor and determined independence until the end of her life. Julia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant son, Victor, who died in 1928. Also, predeceasing her were sons-in-law Ernest Giacomini and Raymond Nordstrom; grandson-in-law Kenneth Hallum; and granddaughter-in-law Debbie Nordstrom. She is survived by her sister Maria B. Conde, and her daughters Nathalie Giacomini and Alda Nordstrom. Surviving grandchildren are Cecilia (Ted Mason), Paul and Fred Giacomini, Nancy Ambrosini (David) and Rod Nordstrom. Additionally, Julia has nine great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her dear friend and "third daughter" Bette Woodson. Dearest Vo, thank you for all of your love, it will remain in our hearts forever. We will miss you so much.
