Later, he returned to Humboldt County and started working in the lumber industry. He did a variety of things ranging from pulling green chain to driving a forklift. He married the love of his life, Ana Maria Ferreira, on September 28, 1968 and, shortly thereafter, started a family. He enjoyed playing soccer in his younger days travelling to San Jose for annual tournaments. As he got older, he followed his favorite teams and even attended his grandchildren's games when his health allowed. He was involved in several Portuguese Fraternal Organizations and enjoyed participating in all the local "Festas" at the Portuguese Hall. He liked to garden and he loved to play cards.
