Oriel Emily Ayers Obituary
Oriel Emily Ayers Oriel Emily (Poscic) Ayers died March 11, 2014, just weeks after her 92nd birthday. She was a native of Eureka, CA, where she resided all of her life. Her health declined after a stroke on January 5, 2014, which eventually brought on her death. Oriel was the wife of Gerry Ayers who passed away in January 2008. They had a strong married life of 66½years. Oriel was mother to 12 children, 24 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 17 nieces and nephews, 30 great nieces & nephews, and their families. All of Oriel's nieces and nephews, as well as many close family friends and classmates of the Ayers twelve, have previously lost their parents, so we shared our mother with them. Oriel was considered the Matriarch of this very large village of extended family. She was considered one of the last remaining mother figures for classmates of her kids. She was admired, respected, and loved by those who held her very close to their heart. Mom brought music into our home both by singing and playing the piano. She performed with the legendary "Triple Trio" from Eureka Senior High at the 1939 World's Fair on Treasure Island in the Bay Area, where they won first place in the Regional National School Music Festival in May of 1939. Her greatest accomplishment was raising her family of twelve children. She was active in the St. Bernard Mother's Guild, Young Ladies Institute, Catholic Daughters of America, and volunteered at Jefferson School in classrooms and the library in her spare time. She was an accomplished homemaker and mother who lived her life without prejudice and judgment, always watching out for the underdog. Oriel's family was everything to her. She is survived by her children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Her children: Michael (Karen) Ayers, Melinda (Norman) Overmoe, David (Sue) Ayers, Eileen Ayers, Elizabeth (Raul) Harris-Velasquez, Phil (Jani) Ayers, Paul (Nancy) Ayers, Maureen (Mike) Brown, Catherine Ayers (Matt Faubion), Tim (Lisa) Ayers, Anne (Steve) Ramirez, and Pat Ayers. Grandchildren and their families: Dan Ayers, Steven Overmoe, Christine Overmoe, Lisa Belair-Sullivan, Kelly Ayers, Jill Ayers, Heidi Jarnaghan, Jeremy Ayers, Jenna Ayers, Kevin Ayers, Andrew Ayers, Ryan Ayers, Emily Kuhlmann, Natalie Naylor, Nickole Jordan, Ericka Murray, Kristi Brown, Brian Laatsch, Kate Ayers, Melissa Ayers, Aaron Ramirez, Kori Ramirez, and Kindee Ramirez. Numerous nieces and nephews from the Ayers, McGaraghan, and Poscic families. Oriel was preceded in death by her husband, Gerry Ayers; her father, Vinko Poscic; her mother, Milka Poscic; her sister, Zdenka McGaraghan, her brother, Lloyd Poscic; her brothers-in-law, John Ayers, Hobart Ayers, Desmond Ayers and Frank McGaraghan; her sisters-in-law Beverley Ayers, Jean Ayers, and Lois Miller; and grandchild, Kyle Brown. Visitation at Sanders Funeral Home on Sunday, March 16th, from 12-2 p.m. Services will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Sixth & H Sts., Eureka, CA. The rosary service will be held on Sunday, March 16th, at 5:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be said on Monday, March 17th, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at Elks Lodge, 445 Herrick Road, Eureka, at 3:00 p.m. The family asks that donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul Fund in Honor of Oriel and Gerry Ayers, @Humboldt Area Foundation, 363 Indianola Rd., Bayside, CA, 95524; Betty Chinn Homeless Fund, @Humboldt Area Foundation; or Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Ave., Eureka, CA, 95501.
