Maynard Wright

RANDOLPH - Maynard "Dingy" Wright, 101, of Randolph, died Thursday, July 25, 2013, at Menig Extended Care Facility.

He was born Sept. 21, 1911, in St. Albans, the son of Carroll and Julia (Luce) Wright. He was raised in Brookfield and moved to Randolph in 1927, graduating from Randolph High School in 1930. He was married to Marjorie Ketchum in Bethel on Sept. 24, 1939.

He attended Boston Art School, then worked for Lamson's Hardware Store before working for Central Vermont Public Service Corporation. At CVPS he worked at various hydroelectric plants in the Middlebury area during World War II. He had also worked at the Bethel hydroelectric plant before selling electric appliances at the Randolph CVPS Store. Mr. Wright operated the Shell Gas Station in Randolph, then served as Randolph town clerk from 1963-66, and was town moderator for several years. He then worked as an appraiser for the State of Vermont Tax Department, retiring in 1977.

Following retirement, he and his wife spent many winters in Lehigh Acres, Fla., and summer and fall at his favorite place, his camp "Chin Whiskers" at Stony Brook in Stockbridge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing at his camp and at the Randolph Camp in Stony Brook with his family. He also enjoyed hunting in Colorado, New Brunswick, and Maine and was a member of the Lake Mitchell Trout Club in Norwich and was a founding member of the Randolph Fish and Game Club. An amateur gunsmith, he carved custom gun stocks and built many deer rifles for friends and hunters in the Randolph area, many of which are still in use today. 

He was an active member of the Brookfield Masonic Mystic Star Phoenix Lodge #97, and was a Shriner. He was also a member of Montague Golf Club and Randolph Rotary Club.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Thow of Montpelier; son, Larry Wright of Stockbridge and Venice, Fla.; brothers, Clarence Wright of Bethel, Gilead and Allen Wright of Randolph; sister, Evelyn Michaelnoick of Claremont, N.H.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his wife, brothers Leigh and Vernon Wright; and sisters Ola Hutchinson and Beverly Rogers.

Memorial services with the Masonic Ritual will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the Day Funeral Home. There are no calling hours. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family at Pleasant View Cemetery.
