Merton L. Deyette

WILIAMSTOWN - Merton L. Deyette, 90, of Williamstown, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

He was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Randolph, the son of Walter and Jane (Johndro) Deyette. He was raised in Randolph, and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in East Granville, Braintree, Randolph, then Braintree, before moving to Williamstown in 1989.

Mr. Deyette had worked for Paul Webster, Dickerman's Mill, had logged with horse and truck, and was a bus driver for the Randolph School District. He was a heavy equipment operator and owned and operated Mert's Dirt Works, where he continued to work for many years after selling to his son, Lee.

He was married to Gertrude Rogers in Randolph on Sept. 3, 1944. She died in 2011.

He was a licensed auctioneer, and was a square dance caller for Don Fields and the Pony Boys, and other bands for many years, and a member of the Ed Larkin Contra Dance Group. He was a member of the Northeast Fiddlers Association, and had been the emcee at the East Bethel Minstrel Show.

Mr. Deyette had served as fire chief for the East Randolph Fire Department, and was a member of the Brookfield Masons Mystic Star Phoenix Lodge #97, the Legion of Guardsmen, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his son, Lee Deyette of East Randolph; daughters, Donna Gregoire of North Randolph, and Crystal Whitcomb, of Williamstown; brother, Ardin Deyette of Chittenden; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Walton and Lauris Deyette, and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Day Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marty Bascom officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in West Braintree.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, with Masonic Ritual at 7:30 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home.
