Winonah S. Augustoni

WATERBURY CENTER - Winonah Sarah "Noni" Augustoni, 77, passed away in the comfort of her family in Largo, Florida, on Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, after a short battle with lung cancer.
Born in Waitsfield, Vermont, on July 8, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Lucia (Backus) Griffith. Noni was raised in a loving family in Waterbury Center, Vermont. She attended Waterbury Center Elementary School and then Waterbury High School where she was very active in school sports and clubs, graduating in 1959.
Following graduation from high school, on July 18, 1959, she married Richard A. Messier of Waterbury and raised two daughters, Michelle and Julie in Burlington, Vermont. On Sept. 23, 1969, she married Charles E. Berns and raised two sons, Steven and James in Arlington, Texas. On July 11, 1980, she then married Henry Augustoni and was with him until his passing in 2001 in Montpelier, Vermont.
Noni always knew that she wanted to be a stay-at-home mother and she raised four children. However, through her life, she did work as a payroll clerk and accountant for several companies. Her last company in which she worked was International Coins and Currency, Montpelier, Vermont (1979 – 2003). She was employed initially as an accounting clerk but later rose to an assistant controller until she retired.
Noni had a love for bowling and golf and was very good at both. During her years in Texas, she participated on a competitive bowling league where she traveled to bowling championship tournaments. She continued with her competitive bowling when she moved back to Vermont in December 1972. Noni also joined Blush Hill Country Club in the summer of 1976 and learned to play golf and found a love for the sport. In 1980, she joined Montpelier Elks Club, winning club championships at both clubs. She continued to play golf in Florida until 2008. She enjoyed most playing golf with her two sisters, Betty Ann and Michelle.
Noni had a love for cooking and she could make anything! In 1974, she started making homemade breads, donuts and jarred pickles and sold them in the local bakery. She also like to host parties and family events. She especially loved hosting Thanksgiving, which was a minimum of 25 people. Her recipes are still being used by extended members of the family, especially her homemade egg rolls, lasagna, cookies and pies.
Noni is survived by her daughters, Julie Jennings, of Boonton, New Jersey, and Michelle Messier, of Largo, Florida; her sons, Steven Berns, of Ehrenberg, Arizona, and James Berns of Brushton, New York; her grandchildren, Alexandra Dort, Morgan Jennings, Jacob Jennings, Adeline Berns Synder and Dylan Berns Snyder; her sisters, Betty Ann Libby, of Waterbury Center, Vermont, and Cindy Griffith, of Middlesex, Vermont; and her Aunt Loretta Wimble, of Waitsfield, Vermont; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Memorial services will be held at the Waterbury Center Methodist Church, 3582 Waterbury-Stowe Road/Route 100, Waterbury Center, Vermont, on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at the home of Betty Ann Libby, 109 Viens Estate, Waterbury, Center, Vermont.
