Michael Precourt Obituary

SHELBURNE - Michael E. Precourt, 57, of Shelburne died on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on August 27, 1955, beloved son of Rinald and Beatrice (Dolan) Precourt. Mike graduated from CVU High School in 1974 and then served two years active duty in the U.S. Army and two years in the Reserves. In 1983, Mike graduated from Keene State College where he was one of Alpha Pi Tau's legendary fraternity presidents.

On August 4, 1990, Mike married the love of his life, Mindy McCarthy. Together, they raised three children, Scout, Sammy and Thomas. Their most precious family memories were summers spent on Joe's Pond. Mike and Mindy acquired the camp from her mother and father in 2009. Mike enjoyed the ongoing renovations to make the camp their own while never forgetting the camp's family history. Mike's favorite pastimes at the camp were gathering with friends and family, sitting by the bonfire, towing tubers and skiers behind the boat and cooking.

After graduating college, Mike returned home to work in the family businesses, B&R Electric, B&R Developers and Precourt Investment Co. Mike's dream was to work with his brothers to grow the businesses founded by his parents. His primary role was president of B&R Electric, the electrical contracting business founded in 1973. B&R Developers created residential and commercial developments and allowed him to operate heavy equipment, one of his passions. He loved operating his excavator to create rock walls that will last forever. In addition, Mike participated in the management of Precourt Investment Co., a real estate company that owns and manages residential and commercial real estate in Chittenden County. Mike enjoyed acquiring distressed properties and transforming them into attractive, well-maintained properties.

As if this was not enough, he operated Dolan Farms with his brothers, son and nephews, raising purebred registered Angus beef cattle. He truly loved caring for the cattle, haying and everything else involved in operating a farm.

Woven through all of these businesses was family. Mike especially enjoyed working Saturdays with his brothers, son and nephews, including the all-important lunch at his parents' house. His work ethic, love and knowledge of equipment has been passed onto his son, Thomas, and his nephews, Joe, Mitch, Justin, Alex and Brendan. They will never forget Uncle Mike and what he taught them. Mike will be remembered for his smile, great sense of humor, generosity, big heart and being the life of the party. He was a longtime member of St. Catherine's Parish in Shelburne, and his faith remained strong throughout his courageous battle with cancer.

Mike leaves behind his wife, Mindy, and their children, Melinda Scout, Samantha and Thomas, of Shelburne; his parents, Rinald and Beatrice Precourt of Shelburne; his siblings, Raymond and Mary Precourt and their children Ian and Julia of Shelburne, Patricia and Jona Bennett and their children Brianna, Kellen and Alainna of Kennebunkport, Maine, Brian and Alison Precourt and their children Megan, Joseph and Alexander of Shelburne, Edward and Jo-Anne Precourt and their children Justin and Mitchell of Shelburne, Steven and Susan Precourt and their children Nicole, Brendan and Kristen of South Burlington; his father- and mother-in-law, William and Mary Porter of East Montpelier; aunts, Anna Landry, Louise LaLiberty, Rita Bourgalt and Rachel Precourt; uncles, Paul Precourt and Leo Precourt. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Edward and Rita Dolan and George and Emelia Precourt.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 14, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 15, at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Church, Burlington. with burial to follow in Shelburne Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mike's memory may be made to the VNA, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446; or to the Shelburne Food Shelf, PO Box 88, Shelburne, VT 05482.

Scout, Sammy, and Thomas,
I've often heard that when individuals are asked the question, "what do you wish you had attended to?" a recurring response is "making a tangible difference in the lives of others by forging a legacy of hope." Your father gave the world a most precious gift in you, his children. You three have already made this world a better place. I look at our youth and know the potential for goodness is strong and I have seen the constant striving for good in you. My life has been enriched by your participation in it.
Thank you, Scout, Sammy, Thomas, and thank you Mike.

To The Precourt Family, First I need to say my heart an soul goes out to the whole family. I am still in shock about MIchael's death. I am writing this with a very broken heart and sadness. Michael and I go back all the way back to grade school and on to high school. Michael and I watched out for each other. Michael was my best friend that I could of ever had and found. My heart hangs so low that we lost contact with each other. Michael you will always be in my heart. May you all find a little peace in your heart as time passes. God bless you all.

To the Precourt Family,

I live in Danville, but grew up in Charlotte. I always looked for your family at Queen of Peace Church in the summer. Your family seemed to exemplify the traditional "Family of Faith". Mike was always thoughtful to ask me how I was doing. My shock at his passing can only be tempered with the Faith and Trust that God has decided to call him home for a reason more important than we can understand. May God bless you all.

Our family is saddened with the news of Mikes passing. Mike was one of my best friends growing up while he worked with our family at Uncle Leos in Shelburne. We would ride our motorcycles together and we would laugh and laugh - he makes me smile now. Just like the day he was following too closely behind and I spun out in a mud whole just covering him in his new red and white striped shirt. He just sat there in disbelief and all I could see was the whites of his eyes. I thought he was gonna kill me but he burst out and laughed too. Gosh what a great memory to share with all of you. My condolences to Mikes entire family. I could not have ever asked for a better friend . Michael Precourt will be missed by many, many friends and family - God speed to you Mike - God Bless you and your family ---Warm Regards - Phyllis Boccuzzi

How sad this is...not only to myself, but my family. So many memories. He worked with our family in "Uncle Leo's" back in the day...he spent many nights playing cards with us and friends in our home...and during his time in the service...I dare say I was his #1 Pen Pal. Michael was dear. Michael was so damn funny. We would go years without seeing one another and then bump into each other and the first thing we did was laugh. I'm so glad I was able to reconnect this past fall. We were able remember together the time we shared in this life. I said this is sad for me...and indeed it is. My condolences to the ENTIRE family. He was great.
