Dorothy Costello Obituary

SOUTH BURLINGTON - Dorothy Wimett Costello died peacefully at home, surrounded by her children, on May 24, 2011. Born in Proctor on Sept. 11, 1922, the youngest child of Alfred and Isabel Wimett, she was the loving wife of Edward Joseph Costello and the mother of eight children.

Dorothy graduated from Pittsford High School and the University of Vermont before teaching high school at People's Academy in Morrisville.

On Sept. 6, 1947, she married the love of her life, Judge Edward Costello, who predeceased her on May 26, 1993. While Edward attended college and later law school, Dorothy worked at the University of Vermont and the New England Conservatory of Music to support her family.

Thereafter, Dorothy devoted her life to her husband and her eight children, who survive her. She was a wonderful mother to Jay (Donna) Costello, Sara Costello, Sean (Wendy) Costello, Paul (Maria) Costello, Dan Costello, Mary (Stephen) Costello-Lazare, Tom Costello and Steve (Jane) Costello. Also surviving Dorothy are her 12 grandchildren, Christopher, Brian and Andrew Griggs, Ruth and Ira O'Meara-Costello, Kate Costello, Libby, Alejandro and Anna Lazare, and Ethan, Tyler and Riley Costello, and two great-grandchildren, Georgia Allen and Kegan Costello, and a special niece, Cathy (Eileen) Wimett.

Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers, Alfred "Bus" and Robert, and sisters, Alice and Ruth.

Patient and caring, Dorothy was a devoted mother to her children and well known by everyone for her kindness and compassion. She was a longtime volunteer for such organizations as Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the Parish Council of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Dot's family wants to express its deep appreciation and thanks to her caregivers at Allenwood and Home Instead for the unwavering kindness and thoughtful care she received.

Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ready Funeral Service, 261 Shelburne Road in Burlington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 136 Locust St. in Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels, 3 Cathedral Square, Suite 106, Burlington, VT or in honor of her granddaughter to the Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation, 755 Page Mill Road, Suite A-200, Palo Alto, CA 94304.
