MONTPELIER - James Countryman, 58, died Dec. 4, 2013, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

He was born March 8, 1955, in Waterbury, Conn., the son of Walter Gay Countryman and Nancy Billinghurst Countryman.
He was a scientist with multiple degrees from three universities, including Yale University.
He was an avid cook and enjoyed music.
Survivors include a sister, Ginger "Ruth" Burke; three nieces; one nephew; three grandnieces; and two grandnephews. He is also survived by his ex-wife and caregiver of 30 years, Marie Countryman, of Montpelier.
A spring memorial is planned.
Memorial contributions may be made to the MS Society.
