Judith Perry Obituary

BARRE - Judith Perry, 90, formerly of Nelson Street and Woodland Drive, died Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Mayo Healthcare in Northfield.

Born April 8, 1920, in Barre, she was the daughter of Dean and Josephine (Hovey) Perry. She graduated from Spaulding High School in 1939. Following in her mother's footsteps, Judith pursued a music degree at UVM, graduating in 1943. She taught in Craftsbury for one year before returning to Barre.

Judith taught piano to many children and adults in the Barre area. She also constructed crossword puzzles for Dell Publications.

Judith and her sister, Mary, resided on Nelson Street and Woodland Drive in Barre for many years. After Mary's death, Judith moved to The Gardens in Williamstown in 2003. In August of 2006, she moved to Mayo Healthcare in Northfield.

Judith was a lifelong member of the Barre Congregational Church and was the organist there for about 20 years. Judith's mother wrote the "Spaulding March," which Judith played for Spaulding graduations and graduation Sundays at church.

Judith is survived by several cousins. She was predeceased by her mother, father and sister Mary. Another sister, Martha, died in infancy.

A service of remembrance will be held in the Barre Congregational Church in the spring. Interment will take place in the Elmwood Cemetery in Barre at that time. There are no calling hours.

Miss Perry was a very calming, but enthusiastic teacher that taught me my music foundation. She was, what I would say was one of Barre's greatest. My thoughts & prayers are with all of the Family.

I, too, was one of Judith’s many piano students, having started with her mother when I was three and continuing with Judith until I was 18. Our two daughters also took lessons from Judith, and all three of us have continued our music, performing in various venues, along with my husband, Bill, who knew and thought very highly of her. It all started, of course, with Judith, who taught us well and put up with our many excuses for not practicing our lessons. She was a great, talented lady, who is probably entertaining in Heaven as I write.

I, also, have very fond memories of Judith. As a child, I studied piano with her for nearly 8 years. She was a task master, but with a gentleness that made you want to please her. As an adult, I enjoyed her delightful sense of humor, and came to appreciate what a fine musician she was. She will be missed by many. Thank you, Judith, for everything.

Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.

We have many wonderful memories of Judy both as Michele's piano teacher and as organist at Barre Congregational Church. She was just a lovely human being who touched many, many lives. God Bless, Judy. We're sure you're providing beautiful, heavenly music.

Miss Perry was a wonderful teacher and role model. Her kind, caring instruction set all of us Sinclair children on the path to instrumental lessons with our dad and provided us the music basics that he thought were so important. I also have kept all of my instruction books and sheet music with stars, encouraging notes, and tattered corners from decades ago. Please know that my prayers will include Judith and family. She was a true 'lady' in every sense of the word!

Miss Perry was my first piano teacher, from age 6 until I went to major in piano at SUNY Potsdam. She was a dear lady, a wonderful teacher and a fine mentor. We met for lunch in the summertime over many years when I would visit Barre. She was always happy to hear my own children play the piano. She was a very influential person in my life, certainly like family. I still have many of the piano pieces that she taught me, with her delicate handwriting notating her instructions for practice. Thank you, Miss Perry, for all you taught me and all you shared.

I took adult piano lessons from Judith, thanks to Suzanna, she was the sweetest, nicest person. I remember her asking me to be in a recital with some of her other students, most of whom were 6 and 7 year olds, needless to say I declined and her comment was, with that twinkle in her eye "Don't worry dear, you'll improve" I have never forgotten that, a great memory
