BURLINGTON - On July 7, 2018, Julia Fellows Whalen, 93, passed peacefully with loving support of her family, caring staff at Converse Home and individuals from VNA Hospice.
Julia Elizabeth "Bunny" was born on May 21, 1925, in the front bedroom of 206 East Ave., Burlington, Vermont. Julia was the third daughter of Eugene R. and Blanche (McGoon) Fellows. She was predeceased by her oldest sisters Ruth, Barbara, and younger brother, Eugene "Gene" Jr. Julia had many pleasant memories growing up with her family and friends on East Avenue.
After graduating from St. Mary's High School, Julia packed up her suitcase and traveled to Montpelier to work in the office of the Vermont state auditor of accounts. She loved living a walking distance to her job and eating her meals at the Tavern and Coffee Corner restaurants.
On Jan. 16, 1945, Julia married Richard R. Whalen, a World War II USAF fighter pilot. Julia and Richard were married for 66 years. Together, they created four children Thomas Michael, Carol Ann, Mary Eleanor and John Francis. The majority of their life together was spent in Montpelier where Julia was a caring, confident mother (and later, grandmother) with a lot of common sense.
In 1985, Julia and Richard moved to a small neighborhood in Burlington. There, they developed friendships with their neighbors, especially their close "Across The Fence" neighbors. Some of her youngest grandchildren were able to participate in the neighborhood's Fourth of July parades and making snowmen in their backyard. Julia was a trusted advisor for her family and taught them the meaning of being thrifty. Her children never heard her talk poorly about other people.
Julia is survived by her eldest son, Thomas M. Whalen and his wife, Kristi Guyer, of Holt, Florida; daughter Carol W. Bailey, of St. Petersburg, Florida; daughter Mary W. Hyde and her husband, Stephen Hyde, of Burlington; son John Whalen and his wife, Mary Drew, of Barre Town; 10 grandchildren: Brad Whalen (Catherine), Brett Whalen (Melissa McLeod), Jeremy Whalen, Courtney Whalen Hernandez (Johnny), Bethany Whalen, Ashley Whalen, Eileen Hyde, Jeff Hyde, Julia Forbes (Chris), Tyler Whalen (Ashley); 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Calling hours are Tuesday, July 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ready's, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington, Vermont. Come share your memories of this beautiful and unselfish women. Julia requested a private graveside service for her family in Our Lady of Holy Rosary Cemetery.
