SOUTH BURLINGTON - Our beloved mother, June Elizabeth Mona, of South Burlington, Vermont, died peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. She was 92.
June is survived by her brother, Robert Williams Felix, of Kirkland, Washington; her oldest son, David George Mona, of South Burlington, Vermont; her middle son, Joel George Mona and her daughter-in-law, Susan Kaye Mona, both of Payson, Arizona; and her youngest daughter, Mary Jane Mona, of Lafayette, California. Her devoted husband of almost 60 years, George Joseph Mona, predeceased her in 2012.
June Elizabeth Felix was born July 7, 1926, in Montpelier, Vermont, to Mary Jane Felix and William Carroll Felix. She was the oldest of three children, always remaining in close touch with her brothers, Clifford Carroll Felix and Robert William Felix. Growing up mostly in Plainfield, Vermont, she never lost her love of Vermont, her hometown, or her hometown friends. In high school, she and three close friends formed a singing quartet, performing at engagement teas and other events. The four maintained this joyful group friendship their entire lives.
June also knew she wanted to make her way in the world. She graduated as her high school valedictorian and, as a first-generation college student, matriculated to the University of Vermont in 1948. During college summers, she worked hard - and had fun! - as a waitress at resorts on Lake George, New Hampshire and the Jersey shore. June graduated from UVM in 1952 with a degree in mathematics. She went on to work at General Electric in Schenectady, New York, holding the professional title of Calculator I. June's job was performing complicated mathematical calculations for a physicist and inventor.
In Schenectady, she easily made more lifetime friends and met the love of her life, George Mona. They married in Plainfield on Sept. 12, 1953, and shortly after their first son was born in 1956, they returned to Vermont to stay, settling in South Burlington.
Through South Burlington friendships, June become active in local civic and social organizations, including the board of the Burlington YWCA, the Burlington Garden Club, the Klifa Club, bridge and card groups, and most recently, a book club. Among her favorite things: our father, flowers, country rides, the piano, dancing, reading, maple creemees and laughter. She took parenting very seriously but also had a fun, silly side.
Following her husband George's death in 2012, June moved to the Allenwood Senior Community, where she reconnected with old friends and made new ones. We must say a big "Thank You" to everyone at Allenwood for their care, kindness and loving support. We reserve a special thank-you to her treasure of a caregiver, Kim Blum, who never failed to raise Mom's spirits and make her smile.
