PEABODY, Mass. - Dr. Philip L. Martin, 93 years, of Peabody, Mass., and formerly of Ridgefield, Conn., died Friday, April 12, 2013, after a brief illness.He was born in Ridgefield, Conn., the son of the late Francis and Doris (Godfrey) Martin. He was raised in Ridgefield and was a graduate of Ridgefield High School. He graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1943. He lived in Ridgefield, Conn., and Brooklyn, Conn., most of his life, and in Peabody since 2003.

He was the husband of his high school sweetheart, the late June (Pascoe) Martin. They shared 62 years of marriage.
Upon graduation from Optometry School, Dr. Martin entered the military and served with the U.S. Army in Camp Forest in Tennessee. There he served examining the eyes of the men in divisions being shipped out, as well as many German Prisoners of War. After his discharge from the U.S. Army, Dr. Martin returned to Ridgefield, Conn., where he built a successful optometric practice. He continued to practice for many years, and retired in 1988.
While in Ridgefield, Conn., he was a member of the Rotary Club. He served on a school committee which was instrumental in the building of a new high school. He also served on the committee that built a new hockey rink.
He and his late wife wintered in Florida for many years and enjoyed touring the United States in their Airstream. They were members of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International and the Cape Cod Airstream Club. Dr. Martin was an avid outdoorsman and loved horseback riding. He also played ice hockey and baseball well into adulthood.
He is survived by his four children, Richard Martin of Tucson, Ariz., Barbara Glass of Harrisburg, Pa., Stephen Martin of Northfield, Vt., and Patricia Martin of Beverly; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
His family is having private memorial services at a later date. His family prefers donations in his memory be made to your local hospice care organization.
