BRAINTREE - Richard C. "Dick" Swanson, 85, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

He was born April 6, 1929, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Nels and Alna (Gay) Swanson.

Dick attended Bridgewater schools and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1948. After his schooling he worked as a ski instructor at Stowe. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge from the service he was married to Nancy Ambrose on April 11, 1953, in Sherburne. Dick worked for Central Vermont Public Service for 37 years, starting as a meter reader and retiring as a superintendent. The Swansons moved to Randolph in 1973. They spent 23 years wintering in New Mexico. They moved to Braintree in 2011. Dick enjoyed skiing, hiking, golfing, gardening and spending time with family. His memberships included Montague Golf Club in Randolph and Rio Members Golf Course in New Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Swanson, of Braintree; a daughter, Zo Hardy, and husband Matthew, of Braintree; two sons, Arni Swanson and wife Margaret, of Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, and Lars Swanson and partner Stacey Renner of Braintree; a brother, Robert Swanson, of Springfield, five grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

Private graveside services, with military honors, will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center at a later date. There are no calling hours.
