COLCHESTER - The Mass of Christian burial to honor the life of Raymond R. Jacobs, of Sunset View Drive, Lone Pine Camp Ground, was celebrated Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at 10 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. Raymond was a longtime Barre area resident and former chief of the Barre Town Police Department, who died July 15, 2014, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston.

Monsignor Reid C. Mayo, former pastor of the church, was the celebrant and homilist. Crucifer Lawrence Reilly was altar server and led the Prayer of the Faithful. Ray's nephew, Mark Roy, read from the Old Testament.

Organist-singer Rosemary Badeau accompanied singers Romeo Bilodeau and Ronald Routhier in the hymns "Amazing Grace," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." She also sang "Ave Maria" at Communion.

The cortege was escorted to the Hope Cemetery by the Barre City Police and Washington County Sheriff's departments, where Monsignor Mayo offered the committal prayers. The folded American flag was presented to his wife, Gloria, by fellow Barre American Legion Post 10 Legionnaire and longtime friend Bruce Judd.

Law enforcement officers attended from the Barre Town and Barre City police forces and the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

A sizable delegation also attended from Raymond's Spaulding High School class of 1957.

Fellowship, a sharing time and luncheon followed at the Hilltop Restaurant in Barre Town.

Monsignor Mayo led a family prayer service Tuesday morning prior to the Mass at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre.

Barre Elks Lodge 1535 presented their memorial service in honor of Raymond being a life member and past exalted ruler (1971-1972) of the Barre Lodge Monday evening at the funeral home. The performing officers were Exalted Ruler Betty Cutler; Leading Knight Robert Campo; Loyal Knight Granville Paine; Lecturing Knight Stacy Holden; Esquire Bradley Lawson; and Chaplain John Cutler, all past exalted rulers of Barre Lodge 1535.
