BARRE - Norma Ellen (Holden) Gagne, 89, formerly of Ayers Street in Barre, died in South Carolina on Sept. 2, 2012, where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Kris Johnson. Born on July 9, 1923, she was the only daughter of the late Celon and Ida (Bouchard) Holden.

She attended St. Monica's Catholic School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1942. This summer marked her proud 70th anniversary of high school graduation.

On June 21, 1944, Norma married Maurice Gagne. They resided in Barre Town until moving to Ayers Street in Barre City in 1964. She worked as a bookkeeper at Homer Fitts Department Store and later as a receptionist at the Hollow Motel until her retirement.

Norma was a longtime member of St. Monica Parish and a 42-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Monica. She was also a member of the Ladies of Ste. Anne Society; Ladies of the Knights of Columbus; the Central Vermont Hospital Auxiliary and Barre Seniors. While in South Carolina, she attended All Saints Catholic Church and was a member of the Women's Organization, Rosary Group, Red Hatters and Newcomers Club of York County.

Norma loved visitors and always enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and neighbors. She traveled on numerous bus trips with her friends including "The Knitting Group."

Norma was predeceased by her beloved husband, Maurice Gagne, in December 1982 and her brother, Joseph Holden, in April 2012.

Survivors include her daughters, Carole Comtois and husband Arnold, of Abbeville, Ga., Rhonda Johnson and husband Kris, of York, S.C.; son Warren Gagne and wife Kristin McGuire, of Essex Junction. She was blessed with four granddaughters, Denise and Eric Cass, of Abbeville, Ga.; Kimberly and Robert Magistri, of Feeding Hill, Mass.; Nicole Gagne and Shawn Gratton, of Winooski; and Christine and Jacob Rivers, of Duxbury. She also leaves 10 precious great-grandchildren, Joshua, Hannah, Benjamin, Noah and Samuel Cass, of Georgia; Justin, Rachael and Matthew Magistri, of Massachusetts; and Chapin and Hattie Rivers, of Duxbury. She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Donna Holden, of Barre, and Rita Bizzozero, of Massachusetts, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre with interment immediately following at Hope Cemetery in Barre.

Family and friends may call at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre, Thursday, Sept. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Due to the construction on Main Street, additional parking is available in the St. Monica parking lot.
