Frank Gaylord Obituary

NORTHFIELD - Frank Chalfant Gaylord II, 93, a longtime resident of Delmont Avenue in Barre City and a renowned sculptor of Barre granite, died Wednesday evening, March 21, 2018, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Leanne and John Triano, on Stony Brook Road in Northfield. He had resided at the Gardens in Williamstown for the past 10 years.
Born March 9, 1925, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, he was the son of Richard and Thelma (Hamilton) Gaylord.
Frank graduated from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg. Next, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper in the 17th Airborne Division, Company C, 513th Parachute Infantry based out of Fort Meade, Maryland, before being honorably discharged with the Bronze Star for Valor Combat Infantryman's Badge and Combat Paratroopers Badge. After his discharge, he went to Temple University on the GI Bill where he graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in fine arts.
On Oct. 15, 1948, Frank married Mary Cornwall at the Episcopal Church in Elkton, Maryland. Following their wedding, they lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before moving to Barre in January 1951. Mary died Jan. 19, 2005.
He was first employed as a sculptor at E.J. Batchelder Co. and Rock of Ages before starting F.C. Gaylord Sculpture Studios. He created monuments throughout the United States and was a member of the National Sculpture Society, as well as the Barre Granite Association.
In his spare time, he enjoyed art, ballet and spending time with family. Being a member of the former Barre Players, Frank will be well-remembered for playing the role of Professor Henry Higgins in one of the most famous American musicals, "My Fair Lady," performed by the Barre Players, being hugely attended at the Spaulding High School Auditorium.
Survivors include his daughters, Leanne Triano and her husband, John, of Northfield, and Victoria Gaylord, of Essex; granddaughter Amy Triano, M.D., and her husband, Cory; grandson John Gaylord Triano and his wife, Natalya; great-granddaughter Quinn Nicole Tefft; nieces Amy Stepanik and Christi Ann Lamberti; and great-nephews Joseph and Michael Lamberti.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary C. Gaylord; his son, Richard Gaylord; and his sister, Ruth Anne Cosby.
As per his wishes, a private service will be held at the convenience of the family. A celebration of Frank's well-lived life will be held at The Gardens at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Place, 220 Vine St., Northfield, VT 05663.

They broke the mold after this guy was made. He was every bit as heroic as his work.

I am sad to read of your Father's passing. It seems I remember Frank Gaylord from my earliest memories. Saturday morning golf with Frank, my Dad and Silvio Nativi - your Dad flexing his muscles and jumping over his 1 wood ... until he saw the light, bought a boat and took up fishing. And the shed on Delmont Avenue with all the clay models your Dad sculpted. Your Dad was truly something special.

Vicky, Leanne and John, I'm very sorry to hear about Frank's passing. I have many fond memories of Frank and Mary and spending time at the house watching Chicago Bears football. I remember Frank telling me stories about his experiences as a soldier during WWII. I wish you all the best during this time of loss and will keep you in my prayers. Dan Morse

So sorry to hear of his passing. I'm told he was a distant relative. My grandmother was a Gaylord from Clarksburg, WVa. My husband and I visited the Korean War memorial some years ago and it was quite a moving experience. Sorry I never got to meet him.
