Smallwood, Walter - Longmont  
Walter Blair Smallwood, Jr. passed away August 21, 2015 at Boulder Manor. He was born to W. B. Smallwood, Sr. and Sarah Hyland Smallwood December 13, 1925 in Minot, N.D. He attended school in Minot and graduated valedictorian of his senior class in 1943. As a youth he engaged in Boy Scouts, giving him a lifelong devotion to the principles of scouting. He served on the governing board of Troop 78, Boulder CO, for many years. Blair and all four of his sons achieved Eagle Scout. While attaining a merit badge in photography, Blair developed a passion for photography, which included being a staff photographer for his high school annuals. He served in the U. S. Army signal corps as cryptographic technician in Nome, Alaska during WWII. Following the war he returned to college at N. D. State University where he joined Sigma Chi Fraternity. While in college he attained 2nd Lt. Commission with ROTC. He graduated with a baccalaureate degree in chemistry in 1950 and master degree in paint chemistry in 1951. He was recalled to active duty in 1951 serving 19 months in the U. S. Army chemical corp. He remained on active Army Reserve for 35 years attaining rank of colonel before the time of his retirement in 1986. In 1953 Blair began his career as research chemist and technical writer for Archer Daniel Midland Co., Minneapolis, MN. Following the family move to Boulder CO in 1959; Blair engaged in technical sales for ADM. His employment history includes technical field specialist for Colorado Paint Company, Denver, CO; paint chemist for Hazen Research, Golden, CO and sales representative with American Gilsonite, Denver, CO. In 1972 he was employed by National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, CO, in a newly created position as manager of Safety & Security to satisfy emerging regulations imposed by OSHA. Blair married JoAnne Zimmermann, of Fargo N. D. in 1950. Together they had six children. Blair was an active member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Boulder and served the church in many capacities. He attended bible studies and senior fellowship and service groups. He was a member of Boulder Lions Club and assumed position of chairman of the Japanese student exchange program. He learned to speak Japanese during this time, carrying his flash cards with him so he could study whenever he found himself idle while waiting on wife or children. Following retirement, he worked one day per week at Boulder County Jail. He volunteered for Boulder Mountain Parks and Boulder County Open Space. He became a local spokesman for Elderhostel, Roads Scholar; promoting their many programs. In retirement he enjoyed traveling, reading, photography, skiing and hiking. His greatest enjoyment came when family functions brought his extended family together. He is survived by his wife JoAnne and six children; W. Blair Smallwood, III and Lanette, Paul Smallwood and Cathy, Jean Ann Smallwood Day and John, Thomas Smallwood and Mavanee, Mary Beth Smallwood Jackson and Doug and Scott Smallwood and Becky. He is survived by 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Boulder Friday August 28 @ 10:00am. Interment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver Friday August 28 @ 3:15pm.
