Celeste Pfannenstiel

Celeste Pfannenstiel, former owner of the Gateway Cafe in Lyons and active participant in the Longmont community through her church and veterans organizations, died Thursday at her home in Longmont surrounded by her family. She was 85. Celeste ran the popular restaurant in Lyons with her family from 1981 to 1997. The Gateway was a gathering place for locals, serving home-style breakfasts and lunches. Located on Main Street, the restaurant was also a stopping place for travelers on their way through town. More than once famous faces would drop in; Governor Roy Romer came in for coffee and Danish, and actor John Ritter stopped in on his way up to Estes Park to visit his son at summer camp. Prior to running her business in Lyons, Mrs. Pfannenstiel worked at the F.W. Woolworth store in Longmont at the lunch counter. She then went on to work for the Longmont Police Department as a meter maid and became the force's first matron. Mrs. Pfannenstiel devoted much of her free time to her church, St. John's Catholic Church of Longmont, and served many years in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2601 in Longmont where her husband Walter was an officer. She was also an avid crotchetier, creating over 400 colorful afghans for friends, family, and acquaintances. If there is an afghan blanket on a bed or couch in the Longmont area, chances are it was made by her. She was born April 8, 1929 in Hayes, Kansas to Lawrence and Anna Younger. She married Walter Pfannenstiel on June 6, 1949. They moved to Longmont in 1955. She is survived by her children Beverly (Ronald) Metz, Eva Feese, Walter Jr. (Diane), Dora (Chuck) Niehus, and Allen (Terry Eden); grandchildren, Kimberly Titmus, Tammy Pemberton, Angie Harris, Paula Feese, Candi Steel; 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter, her parents, two sisters, son-in-law Walter Feese, grandson Butch Feese and companion John Ramey. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 29 from 5:00 pm - 7:00pm followed by a rosary service at Carroll Lewellen Funeral Chapel in Longmont. Services will be held Wednesday, April, 30 at 10:30am. at St John the Baptist Catholic Church with burial afterward at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to TRU Hospice of Boulder County. Please visit www.howemortuary.com to share memories and condolences with the family.
