Elmer Haselhorst

Elmer Joseph Haselhorst, 87, of Longmont, Colorado passed away August 28, 2013. Elmer was the seventh child of 11 born to Henry Haselhorst and Mary (Schrage) Haselhorst in Vincent, KS. Elmer served in the United States Navy during WWII on the USS Cabot and was at sea when the peace treaty was signed with Japan. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and Victory Medals. On October 11, 1948 he married Josephine Schmidt at St Anthony Church in Schoenchen, KS. She was his best friend and devoted wife for 65 years. In 1956 they moved to Denver where they raised their family. After 31 years, Elmer retired from Gates Rubber Co. and moved to Longmont in 1988. Elmer was a proud member of American Legion Post 32 and VFW 2601. He was a man of strong Catholic faith and belonged to St. Francis of Assisi Parish from its inception, as well as a 68 year member of the Knights of Columbus. Elmer is preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Josephine, brothers Ray, Norbert and Irvin, sisters Emmy, Esther, Henrietta and Mary Jane. Elmer is survived by his wife Josephine, daughter Arleen (Charlie) Mack of Longmont, son Alan (Monika) Haselhorst of Loveland; grandchildren, Wesley (Patricia) Haselhorst of Boliva SA, Gretchen (Thomas) Schulmeyer of Attleboro, MA; Justin (Janelle) Mack of Thornton; Josef (Caroline) Mack of Ft. Collins; and Ahna Mack of Gunbarrel. Great grandchildren Paul, Lukas, Jonah, Mason and Lucy; brother Harold and sisters Dorothy and Frances. Viewing with the family present will be Monday, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Foothills Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
